I've been aware of D&D for years, through satire and parodies and just pop culture in general. But when you live in Bumfuck, USA you're never really sure if you can find people to play or not. On a whim, I suggested to my circle of friends that we should try playing D&D back in early August, and to my surprise, they were all down. My friend Gage had even already been playing the game for two years, and so offered to DM for us.
He turned out to be a good DM, whipping up a politically-charged homebrew setting, the first session of which took place on September 2nd, 2020. During which I decided to play a Tabaxi Wild Magic Sorc who was a former slave. We were all brand new players though, so at the time it was a bit of a clusterfuck as we weren't really sure how to play our characters in combat. One player stopped enjoying it and left. But my friend Jackson (another total newbie at the time) came in to replace him, and it was relatively smooth sailing from there as we learned and grew.
Gage and I also joined another campaign, the DM of whom was a friend of someone I knew on the Destroy All Humans! official discord server. At first, this campaign was really enjoyable, but after I think only 3 sessions it went downhill. The DM would hold Session Zero last minute, he was always too focused on playing by the rules and following advice from very specific YouTube experts, and his pacing was... strangely bad, almost as if he was abandoning ideas as we were playing them.
For example, the party ended up playing a magical instrument that teleported to a strange, otherworldly desert of black sand with shrieking volcanoes and oily black worms with porcelain doll heads. The dead were this world's living, and we were perceived as undead. So we picked a direction to avoid coming across any cities trying to find a necromancer, found a city anyway, and ended up getting sent back to our home realm all in the time it took Gage to get a snack.
This DM's PC was also starting to suffer frequent bluescreens, so our sessions ended up going on hiatus quite frequently. Then one day he just decided to abandon this campaign we invested in, and held a sudden Session Zero for some sort of Mad Max meets Water World meets Final Fantasy campaign he'd sprung on us. A few players were... understandably upset. I myself even commissioned art of my Leonin Barbarian because I loved the character that much.
For those weeks this guy's campaign was floundering like a dying fish, my creative juices would be flowing. I'd even lay awake at night, mind like a buzzing hive of angry hornets as idea-after-idea came to me. So I began to write them down.
Thus, in late October, I began to work on my own homebrew campaign setting in earnest. I didn't tell any of my friends at first, simply because it was an intimidating endeavor and I wasn't sure if I wanted to commit yet.
Right about the time AC Valhalla came out, I spent time in between playing that watching very helpful videos from one Mark "Sherlock" Hulmes, the DM for Yogscast's D&D Twitch stream High Rollers DnD, whom I'd found and begun watching through their fantastic Aerois campaign shortly after Gage's campaign with us started. Taking his advice to heart, as well as looking at what did and did not work from previous campaigns I'd played, I'd finally crafted something I was confident people would enjoy playing in.
I took my role as DM quite seriously as well, investing in resources like Inkarnate to make maps, as well as multiple sets of dice, and setting up a virtual tabletop in the form of a discord server, given there was a plague choking the world and Gage lived in a completely different state. I even homebrewed two specific races unique to the setting, the Hynde (anthro deer people) and the Luciprine (anthro wolf people).
So I finally announced that I was going to run my own RP-based D&D campaign, set in my homebrewed world of Vysterion. Gage, Jackson, and my other friend Tasha were immediately keen. James, the best friend of the DM whose campaign didn't work out, also wanted in, especially as he was also miffed about the one campaign put on indefinite hiatus after only 3 sessions. Finally, we got our last player in the form of a nice chap from the UK, England specifically, who had never played himself before but happened to be a High Rollers fan like myself.

• Jackson decided to go with a stealthy Lupricine Armorer Artificer named Stjernesjel. (Literally 'Star soul' in Norwegian.)
• James went a step beyond and asked me if he could play a cervetaur (literally a deer centaur). There are no words to describe how 'yes' I was for this idea, and he named her Kaseda.
• Gage decided to play as a Githyanki Pirate, Swashbuckler Rogue named Ri'a'san.
• Tasha went with a High Elf of the Moon Elf variety named Nyana.
• My nice UK player chappy, Luke, decided to play as a tiefling rogue of the Inquisitive variety, named Shadow.

Session 1 began with the party aboard a ship of pirates, The Moonscythe, chartering cheap passage to the city-state of Setruna, built entirely across an entire archipelago of large islands connected by bridges. The ship they were aboard captained by a Githyanki named Vessik De'Shan. (Imagine Jack Sparrow as a Githyanki. Also, yes, this NPC was very popular, lol. I even watched the entire movie saga just to get his mannerisms and voice right!)
Half of Vessik's crew stole a smaller ship and rammed it into The Moonscythe, damaging the hull and ensuring the ship couldn't move, before engaging in a mutiny that my players staved off quite well. They had a lot of fun with this, particularly because of Githyanki Jack Sparrow.
Afterward, they landed in Setruna and set out toward small goals. The only problem player at this point was Jackson, who didn't even have his character sheet up on D&D Beyond when I needed him to make checks.
The frustrating thing with him is (brutal honesty here) he's a pothead who is obsessed with wolves and Dragon Ball, and even though he had weeks in advance to do so it was clear he didn't read any of the house rules, setting lore, or racial background info for his character. Where everyone else was familiar with the setting, their characters, abilities, and such, he was struggling, constantly having to stop and look stuff up. He later straight up told me that reading a lot 'gave him a headache.'
(Disclaimer: I don't mind him smoking recreationally at all, but it does very noticeably change his behavior and mannerisms. For the worst, most of the time.)
It was clear he was still in a video game mindset because he also wanted to go up to a guard and try to bribe him 1k gp and then promise him another 15k gp. The rest of us were flabbergasted. I asked him if he even had 1k gp on him, which was when we found out he didn't even have his character sheet up. Once he got it open? He only had 20 gp from his Urban Bounty Hunter background and choice of Wealthy Lifestyle.
Plus he hit me up a couple of days later, having learned about the Wish spell (which artificers will never even get unless they find a scroll and are of the appropriate level to use it) and started making up hypotheticals trying to metagame and find cheap ways to cheese any and every situation, so I made sure to make him aware of the balancing for Wish and that there was a chance that he'd never be able to cast it again even if he could cast it.
When I asked him if he understood he said 'Yeah... The DM controls everything and it's impossible to win against the DM...'
And I was just like "No, no no no no no no NO. Dude, the game isn't about 'beating the DM.' You're not playing a COD match against me specifically. It's a ROLE-PLAYING game. ROLE PLAY! The point is not to just win my encounters by any means necessary, as DM I create a world and I bind it by rules. Those rules apply to ALL of us, the DM included. NPCs, monsters, and even the BBEG are bound by the exact same rules you are. I make the same rolls for them you make for your character. It is balanced that way to be fun for everyone."
I also made certain to explain to him to try not to metagame but to treat it like he's actually his character in this world as if he were acting. "You're not Johnny Depp, you're Jack Sparrow. Jack Sparrow doesn't know what hit points and d20s and spell slots are, neither would your character, right?"
Aside from Jackson being a half-baked doofus though, everyone genuinely had fun and I didn't have any complaints! Gage even complimented me on my pacing, worldbuilding, and NPCs, which honestly floored me as I wasn't expecting it to go so well. I became more confident in my ability to DM, but I also kept myself grounded in reality for the inevitability of screwing up at least once.
I was not ready for how bad Session 2 went.
Jackson got high just before the session, breaking one of my Session Zero rules to be clear-headed for the game. (That's six hours max a day, one day a week. It really isn't a big ask, I want my players present at the table and capable of saying their own name.)
He frequently interrupted other players' roleplay, basically tried to force scenarios on me in character that made zero sense, waffled on and ruined the pacing, he would over-explain what he wanted to do and be completely redundant ("I want to walk up and talk to him. That's all I wanna do, just walk up and talk to him. Okay? I juuust wanna talk to him. That's it. I just want to talk to him.").
He would refer to characters like Ardyn from FFXV just to explain how his character bows and tips his hat, he drew comparative analysis to everything I described (he even tried comparing a warforged to a plant-type Pokemon!), and he was frequently glory-hounding, trying to interject his character in every other character's moments, even if he was miles away from them.
James had to leave early during Session 1, so I intended to start Session 2 off by catching up his character. Kaseda, his cervetaur girl, went to the Grand Temple to seek counsel on the issue of a blight ravaging her hermitage.
The high priestess had her imbibe a strong incense which gave her a vision of my world's goddess of the earth. In describing the setting of the vision, literally an idyllic meadow glade with a pond, he derailed the scene to compare it to 'Hircine's Hunting Grounds from Skyrim.'
To which I replied 'not even close,' and then immediately got the reply "Oh yeah, no, so it's like Fenrir's hunting grounds in Norse mythology?" ... I was just like "...Yeah, sure." If only to placate him and keep the scene moving. What should have only taken 20 minutes took up an hour, because of constant interruptions.
Not to mention the abject confusion he caused. While investigating the site of a large explosion, he asked the lead investigator what the guards whose remains were at the blast site were doing there, as if she was omniscient and would know. So I invented a magitek crystal that acts like a two-way radio on the spot and had her contact the Captain of the Guard, who revealed the guard patrol reported in about a 'strange metal man' (a Warforged).
So, in character (or I think he was at least), he mentions that he thinks this explosion may have had something to do with his character's brother (whom it had been established in Session 1 was captured and currently in the custody of a guild of self-righteous anti-thief zealots). The NPC became confused and asked him if his brother was made of metal, after which he clarified that he thought whoever caused the explosion might be trying to get away with his brother right then and there...
James' character Kaseda finally got the pacing back on track by passing an investigation check and finding a trail to follow. Only then to have Jackson want to go back to the crater and look for more clues, despite the fact they all literally had a trail to follow now. Upon following the trail, they found a portal, which Jackson's character wanted to travel all the way back across town just to report it to the lead investigator.
I intended for the session to last six hours maximum, as Luke is from the UK and is 5 hours ahead of the rest of us. His constant nonsense dragged the session out to eight and a half hours, and all but one other player got frustrated and left before I could give out XP at the end.
I also caught him cheating. He frequently told me he had a +6 in multiple skills. The highest number he had across all skills was at most a 4, and that was with proficiency. He told me he had a +6 in persuasion, when I checked his character sheet on D&D Beyond persuasion was only a +2. He never rolled any lower than a 15 either, and probably got at least 6 nat 20s...
By the time the session ended, the player who was left besides him (Gage) pulled me aside to basically just vent, and I had to send apologies to the rest. Needless to say, he got a big talking to afterward, and I filled up an entirely new server channel full of rules addressing ALL of that.
Funnily enough, the thing that really broke me and made me straight up confront him? A day after the session, he called me on messenger and told me that he wanted me to just make up an NPC who was irrationally afraid of his character just so he could make an easy intimidation check so his character could find his missing wife. (Which is literally his character's entire goal for the campaign.)
I decided to enforce my no-mind-altering-substances rule, and he insisted that he be able to smoke weed, that it didn't make him high, and that CBD made him puke. When I wouldn't relent, he ragequit the game after trying to guilt trip and manipulate me into letting him get high.
On the bright side, we immediately filled his player slot within an hour, and he did call me after the session and apologize to me.
And I'm pleased to report the third time is in fact the charm! With my problem player... err, problem, sorted out, the other players had a lot of fun, and I as a DM had fun as well! Session 3 went damn-near flawlessly, as a matter of fact! So my confidence is certainly back.
I decided to keep Jackson's Lupricine character Stjernesjel around as an NPC, played off the events of Session 2 as him getting drunk of his ass on wine, and took a much more serious tone with the character to set up for some potentially cool stuff in the future.
Gage's Githyanki pirate started getting ready to get his own ship to ferry the rest of the players around on.
We introduced our new player's (we'll call him John) character, a changeling wizard who's a bit of a quirky chef. (He would literally just offer everyone he met an omelet and a cabbage.) Tasha's Moon Elf Paladin and James' cervetaur druid Kaseda teamed up to help rescue the high priestess from the same guild that had Stjernesjel's brother. The entire party worked to save the brother, before then working with said brother to plan a heist on the city-state's treasury to recover artifacts and gold stolen from the priestess.
During the rescue mission, the party found an evil-looking book wrapped in chains in the problem guild's HQ. Gage's Gith pirate tried to lockpick the lock securing the chain, only for the heat the book was radiating to turn the pick molten in his hand. He then found a scroll of Protection from Evil and Good before then reattempting to unlock the book, and succeeding. That released some form of evil power into the world, so that was fun. They found the anthro wolf brother in the torture chamber, having his memories drained out of his mind through his eyes (blinding him in the process) by a scary magitek machine and stored in a huge crystal ball. After rescuing the brother and priestess, Gage's pirate decided to deny this guild the memories of the poor wolfman, and so opted to shatter it... Which destabilized and cause it to build up to an explosion.
It was pretty clutch as the base exploded as they crossed the rope bridge connecting the karst the base was built into to one of the archipelago's main islands. They got lucky, caught the bridge ropes and swung on them Indiana-Jones style to safety before climbing up the island's cliff face and then GTFOing to a place that didn't just 'splode bigly, with even the old priestess NPC making a good roll or two and getting in on the adventurous shenanigans.
And there you have it; the story of how my best friend's emotional addiction to pot caused him to ruin my second ever session of D&D as a DM. Fortunately, this one at least had a happy enough ending, and there are no lingering grudges or ill will. Definitely not a bad way to transition into 2021, I'm taking that as a good sign.

Latest news if you are revisiting this thread:

There is NO special rule in place right now that allows you to enter if you have been vaccinated, I will update this post if or when the government makes any announcement about traveling for vaccinated people.

• 28th of January: The travel restrictions and curfew have been extended until the 1st of March (official statement is coming) Source
• 8th of January: The curfew and the mandatory online education for high school students stays in place until the 1st of February. Source

New regulations apply from the 1st of September, 2020:

TL;DR;

You will be allowed to enter if:

• you are a Hungarian citizen, or a family member of a Hungarian citizen
• you have residency in Hungary, or a family member of someone who has
• you can prove that you've successfully recovered from Covid-19 in the past 6 months
• you have a permit (work, study, whatever) lasting longer than 90 days
• you are transporting goods or returning from the transportation of goods
• you are passing through the country (other rules may apply, read more below)
• you are visiting in an official capacity or on a diplomatic mission

You will be allowed to enter and be exempt from the home quarantine if:

• you are a Hungarian citizen (or family member) returning from any V4 country (Czechia, Slovakia, Poland) where you had a reservation that was made before the travel bans, and upon entering you take a PCR test that shows negative result (added on the 1st of September)
• you are a citizen of any V4 country (Czechia, Slovakia, Poland) and provide one negative Covid-19 test no older than 5 days, and you have a reservation in Hungary which was made before the travel bans (added on the 1st of September)
• if you are employed by a Hungarian cultural institute and return to the country after a cultural event (basically musicians, actors and their crew regardless or nationality) (added on the 4th of September)
• if you are attending to an international sports or cultural event in Hungary as a spectator. You might undergo a medial examination upon crossing the border, and you have to be able to present your ticket or invitation to the event. You also need to present one negative PCR test result that was done no more than 3 days before entering the country. You are required to leave the country within 72 hours after entering. (added on the 4th of September) UPDATE: as of the 9th of November, there is a complete ban on events
• if you are a Hungarian citizen returning to the country from a business trip (added on the 4th of September)

PCR tests done in any Schengen country are now accepted. This is an extension of the previous regulation, when only Hungarian tests were accepted.
Further exceptions apply if:

• you can prove that you have successfully recovered from Covid-19 in the past 6 months (medical documentation in English or Hungarian)
• you have been invited by a Hungarian government body, institute, or a Hungarian facility, or you have any supporting documentation that states that your entry is required. Examples: legal reasons, business, work, diplomacy, studying, attending to family events (wedding, funeral), medical reasons, military.

If you plan to enter through exceptions, you need written proof that your entry request is legitimate, and present these documents to the border control upon your entry (more info below).
If none of the above mentioned cases apply to you, there is also special consideration for entry, in which case you need to apply via an online form (read below).
Leaving Hungary is not restricted, but restriction may apply at your destination.
Movement and traveling within Hungary is not restricted unless you are required to home quarantine.
The new regulations are valid for 30 days, starting the 1st of September, 2020.

IMPORTANT: Commercial flights coming from the UK will not be allowed in Hungary after the 22nd of December. After the 5th of January, commercial flights from the UK are allowed once again. Source
The following people will be treated the same as if they were the citizens of Hungary (therefore they will be allowed to enter the country):

• family members (non-residents) of Hungarian citizens
• anyone who has residency in Hungary, AND their family members
• anyone who has a permit that is valid for at least 90 days
• members of Hungarian sports clubs
• people invited by Hungarian sports clubs
• transportation of goods and transit (passing through) will be allowed
• official visits and diplomatic entry will be allowed
• people who can provide a document (in English or Hungarian) stating that you have successfully recovered from Covid-19 in the past 6 months

You will also be allowed to enter Hungary and be exempt from home quarantine if:

More exceptions

You can also enter the country if you can prove that:

• you have successfully recovered from Covid-19 in the past 6 months (proof has to be medical documentation in English or Hungarian)
• you have legal business (such as court summon) to attend to in Hungary, which can be proven by a document issued by a Hungarian jury or legal institution
• private business matters or work you have to do in Hungary, which you can prove with an invitation issued by a government body or a government operated institution (work contract, freelancing contract etc.)
• you have medical reasons to enter the country, which you can prove with a document/invitation issued by a Hungarian medical facility
• you are student of a Hungarian school, college, university, which you can prove with a document issued by your school
• returning to your country of origin after finishing a transport job
• attending to family events such as weddings and funerals (proof: invitation)
• you need to care for a close family member
• attending to an international sports or religious event (proof: invitation) - note that this reason was outruled, there is complete ban on events starting the 10th November 2020!

To enter the country for the above mentioned reasons, you need to have some form of documentation with you (in English or Hungarian) that you can show to border control upon entry.
If you are unsure whether you will be allowed to enter, it's best to contact the police department of your place of planned entry, or the official koronavirus call center.

How to apply? When to apply?

If you don't fall under any of the above mentioned categories, there is also special consideration. In this case, you need to contact the authorities at the place of your planned entry (police office of the place of entry or XVIIIth district Budapest Police in case of the airport):

• you can apply online in English or Hungarian yourself
• you can apply through someone who you give power of attorney, or otherwise authorize them to do it in your name
• if you apply for more than one person who plan to enter at the same time and for the same reason, applications can be done at the same time (each person needs to file an application but they will be grouped)
• one application is enough if the people who enter are all members of the same family

You need to provide:

• reason for your application (why you want to/need to enter Hungary)
• the issue number of the personal identification document you plan to use for crossing the border (ID, passport)
• a copy of a document proving that you have a good reason to enter (suitable proofs are listed above, they mostly expect documentation issued by Hungarian institutions, facilities and government bodies)
• power of attorney or the authorization documentation from all of the people whose application you are handling

IMPORTANT NOTE: If your entry point is the Budapest Airport, you will be able to find it in the from under the names "Liszt Ferenc Nemzetközi Repülőtér 2/A terminál" and "Liszt Ferenc Nemzetközi Repülőtér 2/B terminál"! Thank u/bort96 for the information.
They may decline your application:

• if they doubt the authenticity of the information you provided
• if your entry is a national security risk
• if your entry is a risk from the perspective of spreading the virus
• if your entry is a risk for public safety

In case your application is declined, you can file an appeal. The appeal can be filed through a similar online application on the same website.
Upon crossing the border, they may ask you to present the original copy of the documents that would allow your entry! They might take your temperature and record your details at the border checkpoint. If you have any symptoms upon entering the country, you might be denied entry even if your application was previously accepted! If you don't have symptoms and your intent is to stay in Hungary, the 14-day home quarantine will still apply to you (you should receive paperwork and quarantine notification, read more below at the quarantine section)!

Military

Military convoys are allowed to pass through with police escort and sufficient documentation.

Daily traveling for work

If you are a resident of Hungary or a resident of any neighbor countries, and you work near the border, you will be allowed to enter in case your place of work is no farther than 30km from the border. You will be required to leave the country within 24 hours.
If you are a Hungarian working abroad and close to the border, you will also be allowed to return every day without restrictions.
As of the 8th of September, the Pinkamindszent-Strem border checkpoint (Hungarian/Austrian border) will be operational between 6-8 am. and 3-5 pm. every day to help people who commute to and from work in this area. Source
As of the 11th of September, the following conditions do not apply anymore: you don't need to live/work in the 30km proximity of the border, and you don't have to leave the country within 24 hours after entering. We are waiting for Hungarian authorities to confirm this, here is the official report from Austria on this information.

Transit and passing through Hungary

You are allowed to pass through Hungary for travelling purposes if:

• you cooperate with border control (taking your temperature and providing your contact information)
• you have personal identification that otherwise allows you to cross borders (ID, passport)
• you can prove that your destination country is not Hungary
• your destination country will allow your entry (there are no travel bans in place that you might fall under over there)
• you are required to take a certain route and you may only stop at certain places (except for medical/technical problems)
• you must leave the country within 24 hours
• you must use one of the dedicated border checkpoints for entering and leaving (this is determined by the national police) and the dedicated resting points along the way

Quarantine and Covid tests

Home quarantine

If the authorities require you to home quarantine, you should receive either some paperwork or at least a red note that you are supposed to stick on your front door. Quarantine is enforced by the police, they can check on you randomly in person or through a phone app between 6 am and 10 pm.
While you are in quarantine, you may not leave your place of stay / home for any reason, and you cannot have visitors. Remote work and communication is not prohibited in any way. People are allowed to pass goods, medicine and other things over to you by leaving them in front of your door. They also kindly ask you to double-bag your waste before disposing of it in a bin. The quarantine normally lasts for 14 days.
It is possible for you to home quarantine even if there are other people living in the same household. The Public Health Services advise that for safety reasons, each person in the household should have their own room, eat separately, and preferably use separate bathrooms as well (Source - NNK, detailed PDF).
If you experience any symptoms, you should call either the GP (general practitioner) allocated to your place of stay, the virus hotline, or 112 (emergency number) and ask for an English-speaking operator who should be able to tell you where to go (or not to go).
Update, 18th of September: for Hungarian citizens (and family members) returning from abroad, the duration of quarantine is reduced to 10 days, starting the 21st of September.
Update, 21st of September: your GP will only request a PCR test on your behalf if you have symptoms AND you have been in contact with a confirmed positive case or you've been abroad (does not apply to healthcare workers and people admitted to hospitals, they can get tested anyway). Source - NNK
Update, 27th of October: If they find you breaching quarantine regulations, you can be fine for 5.000 to 150.000 HUF. The main regulations to consider:

• upon entering the country, you are required to provide truthful information of your place of stay
• after entering the country, you must go straight to your place of quarantine
• if you have the required technology (eg. smartphone), you must install the application that the authorities will use to check on you - the software can be removed one day after you were cleared from quarantine
• they will collect the following information about you: name and birth name, place and date of birth, mother's maiden name, permanent address, temporary address or place of stay, place of quarantine (if not the same as one of the above), phone number, email address, nationality, identification number used to cross the border (ID, passport)
• date and place of entry
• the data they collect about you will be deleted after your quarantine expires (only exception is if they fined you for breaching quarantine, in which case they hold on to the data as long as it is necessary to proceed against you)

You can not appeal against an authority's decision to place you under quarantine.

How to skip quarantine

You can be exempt from the 14-day (or 10-day) home quarantine if you provide 2 negative PCR test results. The tests need to be done in a 5-day time frame, with at least 48 hours between the tests. If you can provide these test result upon entering the country, you will not be required to home quarantine.
If they tell you to home quarantine upon entering the country, you can still ask to be exempt (only if you don't have a temperature and/or other symptoms!), but you first need to appeal at the district office and pay a fee of 3000 HUF (roughly 9 EUR). The list of district offices can be found on this website. It's important that if you are under quarantine, you are not allowed to visit the district office in person, you need to ask someone to act on your behalf.
In this case, you have to pay for the tests yourself, unless you are a student and testing is needed for you to attend to your classes.
Tests can be requested through your GP, or the GP allocated to your place of stay. If you are unsure who to contact, try searching by your district/town to see which GP you need to speak to.

Update, 22nd of September: If you got quarantined because you possibly had contact with an infected person, you can no longer skip quarantine with negative test results! Source

How to get tested in Hungary

There is a list of hospitals and sites where you can get tested here (top list is for children, bottom list is for adults). The cost of testing can be found here, it will cost you 30.500 HUF (as of 2019.08.28.) on weekdays and 45.750 HUF (as of 2019.08.28.) on Saturdays (this rate applies to same-day results as well, only if the samples were taken before 10 am), plus an additional optional fee of 1000 HUF has to be paid if you want to receive the results in English.

They are planning to reduce the price of tests done by private labs. This price is set to be 19.500 HUF, but right now (17th of September) we don't know when this change will happen, it is not indicated on the website of the Public Health Services yet. [Source](Source)
Update, 18th of September: The new price (19.500 HUF) for testing is valid starting the 21st of September.
It is important to note, that tests that are requested through your GP are still free as long as you have public health insurance in Hungary. Source
The 18th of September update also states that for the 2020/2021 flu season, starting the 1st of October, vaccines will be free of charge (it can be requested through your GP). Source
Update, 22nd of September: There are changes to free testing, from now on, you can only get tested (for free through your GP) if you have at least one of the main symptoms AND you came from an infected region or had contact with a confirmed Covid positive person. Source

Further regulations to follow within Hungary

Tourism

Tourism is generally discouraged and it's highly unlikely that someone will be allowed to enter the country for solely touristic purposes. Starting the 10th of November, hotels cannot be booked by tourists, only by people on business trips. Source
The regulation (for now) only specifies hotels, but not Airbnbs and private lettings.

Wearing a mask

As of the 10th of November, it is generally required to wear a mask everywhere outside of your home and your car. There are some exceptions, more details below.
As of now, wearing a mask is mandatory

• on public transport and in indoor waiting areas (terminals, train stations etc.)
• in stores and shops (both workers and shoppers)
• in shopping malls (with the exception of restaurants, service areas and gyms)
• at cinemas, theaters, and concerts
• in museums, libraries and archives
• any public service offices (governmental, town and district offices, post offices, police offices etc.)
• in hospitals and social care facilities, except for patients in their own rooms
• at outdoor events and sports events (as of the 23rd of October, Source)
• at indoor events and clubs (as of the 2nd of November)
• at restaurants, whenever you are not eating (as of the 2nd of November)
• outdoor, public spaces of towns if the population is larger than 10.000, the district/towns office is to determine which public spaces this applies to (parks and individual sports activities are excluded) Source

Children under the age of 6 (aource) and people with autism spectrum disorder (source) are exempt.
As of the 10th of September, you can be denied access to public transport in Budapest if you choose not to wear a mask, as well as be fined for 8.000 HUF. Source
As of the 18th of September, you can be denied service if you don't comply with the mask regulations, and you can also be fined. They will likely not go light on this because shops are looking at a very severe fine if they are found not to enforce these regulations Source.
As of the 2nd of November, penalties become higher and stricter if a shop or facility violates mask regulations, police is authorized to - in extreme cases - close the place effective immedately, for at least a day but up to a year. Source

Visitation

Hospitals do not allow visitors right now. Exceptions might be made in case of visiting a patient with terminal illness, or parents visiting their child. It is required to wear protective gear and cooperate with the hospital staff.
Further exception can be made in individual cases based on special consideration, but you need to contact the specific hospital for this.
Residents/patients of retirement homes, social care and similar institutes are not allowed to leave these institutes. Homeless shelters are exempt. Further exceptions can be made if someone is going to work from these places. New residents can only be admitted after 2 negative Covid-19 test results. Residents with symptoms should always be transferred to dedicated hospital wards.
These rules apply to both state operated and private institutes.

Club, events, restaurants

Any indoor event must keep the number of attendees under 500 (including staff and employees). Every club, night club and restaurant must close at 11 pm and cannot reopen again until 6 am the next day. Source Source2 Restaurants are only allowed to accept payments and hand over takeouts after 11pm.
Starting the 10th of November, restaurants have to close and they can not offer table service (home delivery and takeaway is still allowed). Gatherings of any type, are banned.
Cultural events and outdoor events, including Christmas fairs, are banned. Theaters, cinemas, libraries and zoos must stay closed. Source
Personal and family events for up to 10 people are allowed. Weddings are only allowed without a reception and only with limited attendance (official/religion personnel, husband and wife, their witnesses, their parents and grandparents, their children - friends are not allowed). Funerals up to 50 attendees are allowed.

Sports

Sports events will still be held but spectators are not allowed. Gyms, pools, baths and indoor and outdoor sports facilities must stay closed. Casual group sports (such as outdoor football) is not allowed. Individual sports activities (such as running, biking) are encouraged. Source

Schools and education

Starting the 1st of October, both students and teacher can only enter these institutes after an obligatory thermometer checkup. People who are not working at the school or studying at the school are not allowed to enter the school area (parents). If they wear a mask, they can accompany their small children up to the thermometer checkup points but no further. Source
As of now, kindergartens and elementary schools are open unless an official body closes them individually. Starting the 10th of November, online education applies to high school and universities. University dormitories (but NOT high school dormitories) must stay closed, unless the university declares otherwise. It is encouraged to allow foreign students and quarantined students to stay at their dormitories. Source
School, kindergarten and hospital staff must be tested for covid weekly.

Curfew

Starting the 10th of November, a curfew will apply from 8 pm. to 5 am. During the curfew, you can't be on the streets unless you are commuting to work, which you might be required to prove, should the authorities want to check it. Source
You are allowed to walk your dog during curfew hours within the 500 metre proximity of your home.
If you need to commute to work between 8 pm. and 5 am., you will need a permit filled out by your employer, which you can download here or from a direct link here.

Shopping

Shops must close at 7 pm, pharmacies and gas stations are exempt (tobacco shops must also close!). Source
Starting the 24 of November, between 8-10am on weekdays and between 9-11am on weekends, only the elderly above the age 65 are allowed inside grocery stores and pharmacies. They can technically shop at any other time as well, but these hours are reserved for them, and younger people will not be allowed inside. Source
The shopping slot for the elderly is suspended again, starting the 12th of December Source.

• The NWA is the nexus of the three biggest stories this week, and the possible Turner buyout of the promotion may be the biggest story of the year. It’s been rumored for weeks that the Crockett family will sell the majority of their shares to Turner Entertainment, and Dave can confirm that such a deal is currently awaiting approval from Turner’s acquisitions committee. If all looks good, we should know within a week. We're not going to know within a week, this is going to take more time.
  
• If Turner does buy the NWA, Jim Crockett is likely to remain in charge of day-to-day operations. The rest of the family would be divesting themselves of their interest in the company, and Turner will be in charge of promotion, PR, and other business activities. This should theoretically result in a “more professional and business-like approach.” Peers into the future HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Anyway, Dave thinks it’s foolish to speculate at this point about possible ramifications of the deal. And getting out of speculation and into fact: if the deal doesn’t go through, NWA is in a lot of trouble going into the summer, and they need to make major changes to how they conduct business no matter the outcome of the deal. There are wrestlers in the NWA who are owed money, and they’re not going to work for free.
  
• Thanks to Turner’s help, the NWA has already cleared availability for over 8.5 million homes for the Great American Bash ppv on July 10. Vince McMahon’s attempt to monopolize ppv wrestling has failed, at least for the moment. This is the second widest potential audience for a ppv wrestling event ever (Wrestlemania IV cleared 10 million potential homes). With WWF running a ppv (the Summerslam) from Madison Square Garden on August 29, that means most ppv providers have elected to ignore Vince’s ultimatum prohibiting competing wrestling ppvs 60 days before and 21 days after a WWF ppv. That ultimatum killed Starrcade last year, but let’s be thankful it’s pretty much dusted. This all means WWF has failed to kill Crockett’s ability to run ppv events, which was one of their goals.
  
• The card for the Great American Bash is set. Flair vs. Luger for the NWA Title; Windham vs. Rhodes for the U.S. Title; Triple tower of doom featuring the Road Warriors, Garvins, and Steve Williams vs. Kevin Sullivan, Al Perez, Mike Rotunda, Warlord, and Barbarian (yep, they’re going forward with it); Tully and Arn vs. Sting and Koloff for the world tag titles; and Midnights vs. Fantastics for the U.S. tag titles.
  
• The income potential is big for the Great American Bash. If they equal their previous buyrates, they should clear over a quarter million homes and take in ppv sales of over $4 million (ppv for the show will be $15.95), which will at the most conservative estimate give the NWA a cool $1 million in revenue after all the other splits on the ppv total revenue.
  
• The FCC ruled in favor of syndicated exclusivity this past week, and this has some potential consequences for the NWA. Syndicated exclusivity means that any program carried in your local market (so a show that’s put on free tv) cannot be shown on cable by bringing it in from another market. Dave gives the example of how if your local channel 7 carries the Beverly Hillbillies, then your cable company can’t show Beverly Hillbillies by pulling it in from another station in a different market, even if it's in another time slot. This is a potential catastrophe for WTBS, because so much of their programming is old network reruns which duplicate stuff shown in most markets, meaning they have to completely change up their programming or have so little of their material picked up by cable companies that they drop the station altogether. This is effective a year from now (plus any time that might get it stalled by court appeals), so there’s probably a couple years before it really goes into effect, but this is the main reason Turner is starting the TNT network and why eventually you’ll see wrestling get on there alongside the sports and movies and there won’t be old network tv reruns on it.
  
• Curiously, the NWA was doing the hard sell of the May 22 Omni house show on this past Saturday’s TBS show. The press boxes were really full (they’re usually totally empty), and Dave supposes they were probably filled with Turner executives checking out what they’re considering buying. It worked, by the way - 7,300 fans turned up for the Omni show, triple the crowd at last month’s show (and no, the card wasn’t any more enticing than last month’s either).
  
• Reborn UWF had their first show on May 12 and the fans flooded in. They sold out Korauken Hall in 15 minutes about a month ago, with all seats priced at $40 (a $92,000 gate). The first match of the three match show had Nobuhiko Takada vs. Shigeo Miyato in a ten minute exhibition, where Takada won with two submissions to nothing for Miyato. Tetsuo Nakano made Yoji Anjo submit in a 24 minute match for the second match of the show. Lastly, Akira Maeda and Kazuo Yamazaki had a match with tremendous heat and it is clear that there is no man in wrestling as over as Maeda is. Maeda hasn’t wrestled since he shot on Riki Choshu in November last year, and as a result he wasn’t quite in top condition and blew up part of the way through the match, but they went 25 minutes and Maeda won by submission. Dave was told American fans would likely be bored by the match, but the fans there were eating it up. UWF’s next show is set for June 11 in Sapporo, and all 6,000 seats sold out on the weekend of May 13. The real test is coming, though: will they be able to maintain interest with only three major stars and no regular foreigners? They’ll have foreigners in Sapporo, with those guys probably doing singles matches against Takada, Yamazaki, and Maeda.

• Former wrestler and referee Fred Atkins passed away at the age of 77 on May 13. He was originally from New Zealand and refereed for Frank Tunney in the Toronto area for a long time. He also managed Giant Baba in the 1960s during Baba’s heel tours of the U.S. His biggest match as a referee was the Terry Funk/Harley Race NWA World Title change at Maple Leaf Gardens in 1977.

• Financial News Network, which debuts Continental Wrestling Federation on May 29, announced that they’ll be airing World Wrestling Council’s anniversary show this fall. WWC’s show drew 42,000 fans to three locations last fall, and will be aired live starting at 8 EST on September 10. Just an aside, but that means the card starts at 9 pm in Puerto Rico. Billed for the show are 12 championship matches featuring the likes of the Road Warriors, Rock ‘n’ Roll Express, Iron Sheik, Bruiser Brody, and more. Sadly, we’re going to have very different news related to Brody soon. As far as Dave knows, this is the first time an international big show is being broadcast live in the U.S.
  
• Dave got a chance to see the tv from the Oregon promotions and there’s a lot of sly remarks about the other promotions going on. Haynes’ OWF (Oregon Wrestling Federation, the Washington part isn’t there anymore) is emphasizing the size of their wrestlers and how they’re trying to put Oregon on the Map. Don Owen’s Big Time Wrestling, on the other hand, is emphasizing action as well as touting how they have only a 3.5 hour delay between taping and airing, as opposed to the OWF taping a week in advance. Dave says it pretty much is a battle of action vs. size from watching the shows. And if you know Dave, he prefers action to size.
  
• On Big Time Wrestling, they announced Curt Hennig would defend the AWA World Title against Col. DeBeers on May 19. Two reasons for that to be silly. First, Hennig lost the title five days before they announced this. Second, why are they billing DeBeers with his South African gimmick when he was a major headliner here for years as Ed Wiskoski?
  
• Turns out Abdullah the Butcher had gallbladder and ulcer surgery, not kidney surgery. He was released from the hospital on May 19, and should be back in action in late July. This really hurts the current All Japan tour, since he was set as one of the big headliners for the tour.
  
• All Japan will be unifying the tag team titles rather than the singles titles on June 10. Tentatively, they have Tenryu and Ashura Hara putting up their World tag titles against the Road Warriors and their International tag titles. But first they have a world tag title defense scheduled for June 6 in Sapporo (just 5 days before UWF’s show there, so note the timing and how they’re dealing with competition) against Jumbo Tsuruta and Yoshiaki Yatsu. Most expect Tsuruta and Yatsu to win and go on to the unification. And All Japan will deliver on expectation.
  
• JWP, the younger of the two women’s promotions in Japan, will be closing up shop after their May 29 Korauken Hall show. The wrestlers haven’t been getting paid lately because there’s just no money coming in for them. The promotion debuted in 1986 and just never got a television foothold established to ensure survival and cash flow.
  
• All Japan Women is limping along after the retirements of Dump Matsumoto and Yukari Omori, which has led to their ratings being cut in half. There are even rumors that Chigusa Nagayo may retire out of shame that the company’s business has fallen so far and that she hasn’t been able to keep ratings up.
  
• In other news about All Japan Women, some of the owners (the Matsunaga brothers, the last of whom died in February 2020), are trying to sell stock and divest themselves of a portion of the company. They thought bringing in the Jumping Bomb Angels as WWF tag champions would drum up interest, but they haven’t proven to be drawing and really what they are drawing is pretty much down to Chigusa Nagayo. So if Chigusa leaves, the whole company’s in major trouble. On June 8, the Jumping Bomb Angels defend the WWF women’s tag titles against the Glamour Girls, and spoiler alert - that’s going to be an unauthorized title change and kill the women’s tag division as a thing in WWF.
  
• [Stampede]: Steve Blackman’s nickname is Rambo. Just thought that was funny.
  
• Owen Hart wrestled his last match in Calgary for Stampede before going to his Japan tour. It was an absolutely wild brawl against Makhan Singh for the North American title. The finish had Hart thrown onto the floor and Singh’s manager Abdul Wizal started choking him with a chain, only for Hart to escape and tuck the chain in his trunks, which led to him using it to KO Singh and pin him. Then Vulcan Singh (Gary Allbright), dressed as Jason the Terrible, came and attacked Hart and told the referee to check Hart’s trunks, where he found the chain and reversed the decision.
  
• Jerry Lawler’s first defense of the AWA World title against Bill Dundee drew only 2,200 on May 16. Face vs. face and Lawler used a chain to win. Other matches included Robert Fuller beating Jeff Jarrett and Max Pain beating Curt Hennig by disqualification in a CWA title match.
  
• Dave got a chance to watch the tv from the week before the AWA World title change in Memphis and is amazed they didn’t sell out the show with the title change. They hyped the show great, but it’s clear Memphis is trending downward, and no amount of local news coverage or having the mayor on air begging people to come support Lawler seemed to get them there. All the local stations, bar one, covered the title change as just straight up news without even being tongue in cheek about it, and you never see that in tv news these days. When ESPN and CNN and ABC radio covered Wrestlemania, all of them were treating it like a joke. Memphis is really the last bastion of kayfabe, in a way.
  
• Visiting Memphis on the May 23 tv show and making his Rewind debut is Bob Holly. He’s teaming with Pat Rose in an AWA Tag title match, and they’re coming in from World Organization Wrestling in Pensacola. Nobody knows who Holly is, and nobody in the area remembers Rose, so they’re not going to be exciting anyone at the show.
  
• Missy Hyatt is gone from Memphis. There seems to be heat, but Dave’s not sure what the story is. Robert Fuller has twice stolen angles of Eddie Gilbert’s design for Continental and used them days later in Memphis, so that’s probably part of it. The planned Lawler vs. Gilbert AWA title defense set for May 29 has been canceled.
  
• Missy Hyatt is in Continental now as a tv announcer. Also newly added are Mr. Olympia and Willie B. Hurt. Willie is Pez Whatley doing a comedy gimmick where he tells the fans they know his real name and who he is and where he’s been, but now he’s Willie B. He’s a comedy gimmick who won his debut in a squash, though, so that’s different.

• Gone from Continental are Steve Armstrong and Robert Fuller, who both no-showed. Dutch Mantell also appears to be gone.
  
• In USA Wrestling, Terry Gordy and Wendell Cooley did a 20 minute draw on May 14. The match itself was so-so, but they brawled for another 20 minutes after the match and went all over the building, and that was great.
  
• They also did a big heart attack angle with Ron Wright in USA that was all taped for tv. It all came on the heels of a match where Mongolian Stomper wrestled the Bullet and if Bullet lost, he’d have to unmask. Well, Bullet lost, and under the mask was the Bullet! Yeah, he wore a mask under his mask.

• Word from Larry Sharpe’s Monster Factory are that Futahaguro’s training drills showed him to be really agile for a 350 lb guy. Word in Japan is that if he does go into pro wrestling he’ll go with All Japan over New Japan. Inoki doesn’t sign sumo wrestlers because TV-Asahi holds the purse, and they have a good relationship with the sumo world (they even have a weekly show called Sumo World). Bringing Futahaguro in would be highly disrespectful of New Japan, considering that he was banned from sumo, so yeah. Koji Kitao will not be likely to head to New Japan.
  
• Before he left for the U.S., Riki Choshu banned two major Japanese magazines from conducting interviews and taking photos of himself and the other wrestlers under his banner. That means Super Strong Machine, Hiroshi Hase, Kenta Kobayashi, and more. The magazines? Weekly Fight and Weekly Pro Wrestling. This seems to be in retaliation for positive and strong coverage of UWF, with Weekly Pro in particular getting strongly behind them and even saying things like NJPW doesn’t have top heavyweights and saying Choshu jumping back and forth between All Japan and New Japan has caused the recent hard times in the business in Japan. This got Choshu upset and he’s already hard to deal with at the best of times, but he really didn’t care for being told he’s past his prime or hurting the business. And yet… they kind of have a point.
  
• WWF also has press issues of late related to Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth. They’ve been trying to get Elizabeth and Savage featured in newspapers and on tv to get him over in the media as the face of WWF while Hogan’s gone. It has not gone well. The very first interview, which Dave believes was with a Boston paper, called Elizabeth an airhead, and all subsequent interviews have been canceled. While she may not be a great actress, Miss Elizabeth is definitely a character and Elizabeth Hulette Poffo is not an airhead, according to those who know her well.
  
• World Class now has a committee handling booking. You’ve got Bill Irwin, Eric Embry, Scandor Akbar, Michael Hayes, and Ken Mantell handling booking. Dave’s never seen booking by committee work in the past because you have too many cooks in the kitchen. Their three shows this past weekend drew under 400 fans each, so at least they’re trying something.
  
• Jerry Lawler is working on a deal to do AWA vs. WCCW title vs. title matches with Kerry Von Erich in Dallas, Memphis, and Kansas City. This is the beginning of the eventual formation of the USWA.
  
• Roddy Piper’s next two movies out in theaters have completely opposite word of mouth about them. Buy and Cell, according to someone who saw a preview showing, is absolutely terrible. They Live, however, is good and genuinely scary. If it does well, expect Piper to do more films with Carpenter. If it flops, he’s probably done as an actor.
  
• World Class has gone to the WWF school of crowd estimation. Mark Lowrance called the crowd at Texas Stadium “20,000 fans” while Kerry von Erich said “15,000.” The reality was they had 5,900 paid.
  
• Scott McGhee, who suffered a stroke in January and was thought would never wrestle again, may return to the ring. Dave got a report that he’s starting up or soon to be starting up in Florida. Unfortunately, it’s a false alarm. McGhee will have a match in 1989, but he’s done.
  
• There’s a lot of heat between Verne Gagne and the Rockers. So much so that Verne wants to put together a new team under the name the Midnight Rockers since he owns the trademark (that’s why they wrestle as the Midnight Rock & Rollers in Continental). What's with companies wanting to put knockoff guys in Kliq guys' gimmicks?
  
• Deep South wins the “lowest class act of the month” award. They have a segment with the reader mailbag, which Dave has always assumed was largely kayfabed. Well, some subscriber wrote a letter in and it was highly critical, particularly of the cheap shots they take at Joe Pedicino on tv. Well, they read the letter on the air. Only they changed all the content to make it highly complimentary to Deep South. So there you have it, they kayfabe the letters to make themselves look good. I feel like this is more Dave being offended on behalf of a subscriber than something shocking and truly low, though.
  
• Dale Gagner, who used to work for Eddie Sharkey in Minnesota, now books for Billy Haynes as booker in OWF. When he worked for Sharkey, his manager name was Diamond D. You might know him as the guy who tries to claim a relationship to Verne Gagne and use the AWA name in the late 90s (check the Feb. 22, 1999 and March 21, 1999 rewinds for more on that business). Dude’s a snake, and not in a fun Randy Orton or intimidating Jake the kind of way.
  
• One of Buddy Rose’s former “Playgirls” is now suing Hugh Heffner. Okay, so back in 1983 Buddy Rose was “Playboy” Buddy Rose and his valets were his “Playgirls.” Well, one of them was a model named Carrie Leigh, and she eventually moved in with Hugh Heffner and is suing him, which has made news lately. We’re never going to talk about this again, so here’s the brief: she’s suing for palimony (basically, they were not married, but she felt they had a relationship of marriage-level significance and then the same basic idea behind suing for alimony goes forward). She alleges Hugh told her he wanted to marry her, have kids with her, etc. and now that’s not happening and they’ve separated and she’s suing. And this won’t even get a settlement, but this was apparently a trendy kind of lawsuit in the 80s. They never worked.
  
• ITV in the UK will be dropping wrestling by the end of the year. It’s part of an effort to “polish up” their image. Wrestling audiences on ITV have fallen from over 7 million to 2.5 million in the past few years, and production costs for wrestling have been costing the station almost $2 annually, so time to cut costs. The big reasons for the drop off in ratings and interest is the death of Mal Kirk via heart attack in the ring and the public revelation that Big Daddy, whom Dave calls a 50 year old, 350 lb version of Dusty Rhodes, was really the promoter’s brother. Kirk’s heart attack happened right after Daddy splashed him, too. It’s also come out just how poorly promotions have been paying wrestlers in England. In short: Britwres has always been an absolute shitshow, and I’d say the only difference between then and now is how many nonces they have today, but they had Jimmy Saville back in the day so fuck it, Britwres is and always has been proper fucked.
  
• A couple weeks back Big Bubba Rogers debuted as the Big Boss Man on WWF “C” team shows. He’s still got the sunglasses, but he’s now being billed as a prison guard and squashing Jose Estrada. Until he’s facing bigger guys, he’s been told not to sell a thing. Expect him to debut on tv in mid-June.
  
• WWF managers are officially said not to be traveling except for tv nights. So now Fuji and Heenan will make the shows they’re supposed to wrestle on and Jimmy Hart, due to his gimmick, will show up to some of the shows in buildings he’s supposedly banned from. Slick and Humperdink will only be used on tv, and Humperdink may even be at risk of being let go. Elizabeth will be on all Randy’s shows due to her importance to his act.
  
• WWF is reviving the weasel suit angle for Heenan vs. Ultimate Warrior in Philadelphia next month. The weasel suit originates in Heenan's AWA days.

• Wrestlers in the NWA were due their big payments on May 1 and they still haven’t come in. Lots of disgruntled wrestlers, now. Also the Main Event show hasn’t resulted in any payments either beyond standard tv money, which is like $100, and those shows were put together to be bigger paydays for the guys in the neighborhood of a few thousand per show.
  
• Loads of NWA guys rumored to jump ship to WWF, but that’s always the case. Dave’s only heard three names from WWF people, and only one of them is an NWA guy (probably Sting, I’d guess).
  
• Dave’s not seen the whole schedule for the Bash tour, but NWA is about to start promoting it heavily. There’s going to be something like 19 scaffold matches and 15 War Games matches between June 26 and August 7. There will even be a triple tower of doom or two. FlaiLuger for the NWA title on July 10 is set to be the only NWA title match on the tour. They’ll be put in tag matches otherwise, including War Games matches.
  
• At an NWA show in Houston taped for the local market, Steve Williams apparently looked directly into the camera during his match and asked “How did you like that, Vince?” Not a clue what that’s about.
  
• Dave’s got complaints about NWA tv. They didn’t follow up on either main event angle from last weekend. Instead they did a bit where Kevin Sullivan kidnapped Precious for all of 90 seconds, because they had the Garvins find her under a table shortly after the kidnapping, at which point she shouted "You stay away from me, Jimmy Garvin." That's some fast-action brainwashing right there. They also did a Road Warriors vs. Powers of Pain match that had Hawk do a stretcher job, but they didn’t show it on tv and never followed up. They also haven’t announced a single match for the second Clash on tv yet. That’s only two and a half weeks away. Stop showing palm trees in your commercials and start advertising matches.
  
• Larry Young, an umpire for the American League, writes in to say he’s happy to have discovered a newsletter for smart wrestling fans. He talks a bit about pro wrestlers who had baseball careers. Mostly I bring him up because during the 1995 umpire lockout he winds up refereeing Undertaker vs. King Kong Bundy at Wrestlemania 11.
  
• More letter writers are big mad about the letter in the May 9 issue that thought Dave was off the mark about Clash vs. Wrestlemania. They're upset about the letter being insulting to Dave and disagreeing with them about what wrestling was good that night and honestly Dave doesn't need them to defend him.
  
• A letter asks about the whereabouts of a bunch of wrestlers from the old California promotion Big Time Wrestling. Dave gives an overview. It was run by Roy Shires from ~1961 through 1981 and occasionally did shows in Hawai’i, Samoa, and Nevada as well. It wound up folding because when their top talent got stale, they replaced them with cheaper talent and the fans could tell the difference in quality and stopped supporting them. When AWA started running in the area, they pretty much gave up. Dave says he always thought it was ironic Verne would complain about Vince’s business practices, when Verne did the same thing to Big Time Wrestling. Anyway, Dave goes and gives some updates on the wrestlers. Pepper Martin is an actor. Kinji Shibuya has been retired for a decade and lives in the Bay Area. Masa Saito is still a big star in Japan. Raul Mata trains wrestlers in Florida. Dutch Savage does color commentary for Don Owen in Portland. Paul DeMarco still occasionally wrestles independent cards. Lars Anderson hasn’t been heard from since he booked for Mrs. Maivia in Hawai’i two years back and it went poorly. No clue where Mephisto is. Lonnie Mayne died in a car accident about ten years back. No idea what became of Bobby Garrett and Jim Starr.

Players whose average rank had them land in places 20-11 are on this portion of the list revealed today. Players are associated with the team they finished 2019 with.
Below you will see write-ups from rankers summarizing the players' 2019 season and why they were among the best in 2019. Stats for each player are from this season and are included below. Additionally, their previous ranks in this long running series are also available for all of you.
Methodology

1. A CALL FOR RANKERS just after the Super Bowl.
2. Rankers for each team nominated players to rank. 10 Games Played Minimum Threshold. Players are associated with the team they finished the 2019 Season with.
3. The Grind. Utilize ranking threads for individual rankers broken up by positional group. Users were tasked with ranking players within the following tiers based on their evaluation: T-25, T-50, T-100, T-125 based on 2019 regular season only. There were no individual case threads. There were no arbitrary position limit caps. Just questions and rankings.
4. Users submitted their individual Top 125 list. Ranking out to 125 is new for this year.
5. User lists were reviewed for outliers by me with assistance from two former rankers. Users were permitted to correct any mistakes found. Once complete, lists were locked.
6. Reveal the list… right now.

#20 - Danielle Hunter - EDGE - Minnesota Vikings

Khalil Mack. Von Miller. JJ Watt. Those are the names that come up when you mention edge players in the NFL over the last half a decade. Yet none have as many sacks as Danielle Hunter in the last two years. Hunter is continually passed over in the conversation of edge rushers. Even among young edge rushers like the Bosa brothers, TJ Watt, Myles Garrett, and Bradley Chubb, Hunter is forgotten. He only received 4 All Pro votes from AP (of a possible 50). He failed to make PFF’s All Pro team. Is it because he wasn’t a 1st round pick? Is it because the Vikings defense was already dominant before his arrival?
Hunter has improved every year he’s gotten into the league (88 pressures this year vs 67 last year vs 55 in 2016). His first couple years in the league, he rotated in behind Everson Griffen and Brian Robinson. Yet he holds the record for most sacks before his 25th birthday and was one of only a handful of players in 2019 with double digit sacks and 15+ TFLs last season. He earned an 89.0 overall grade from PFF and forced 3 fumbles this year.
Beyond the numbers, Hunter is a unit. He came out of LSU as one of the more raw pass rushers in his draft. However, under the tutelage of the mighty Andre Patterson, Hunter has become one of the most athletic, versatile, technical, dominant edge defenders in the game. He can beat you with a pure bull rush, but he can also beat you with his speed and agility. He’s picked up Everson Griffen’s deadly spin move and has the motor to work through double teams. He can win with an inside move, or he can play pure 3T for an entire game (a la vs NO). He’s got a great understanding of the game and is a force to be reckoned with. If you’re placing bets for DPOY in 2020, don’t waste your money on the big name guys like Aaron Donald (+750) or Khalil Mack (+1100). Don’t spend it on young up and comers, lke Nick Bosa (+1300) or TJ Watt (+1500) either. Place it on Danielle Hunter (+2300). He’s going to continue dominating as he gains more recognition and climbs toward stardom.

At the beginning of the 2019 NFL season Bruce Arians said:
"I think Chris Godwin is going to be close to a 100-catch guy, especially because I think he can play in the slot,"...."He's never coming off the field."
Bucs fans thought this could be very well true in BA's system, especially with the departure of Desean Jackson which only really left Mike Evans as the only other real target on the team.
The 3rd round pick from Penn State showed up big time this year after having two relatively quiet seasons. Through 13.5 games (missing the final 2.5 due to a hamstring injury) he amassed 86 receptions for 1,333 yards, 9 TDs and only one drop(In fact he's only had 2 drops total in 2018 & 2019)He very well could have gone over 100 receptions , 1,500 yards as well as double digit TDs, but that's just projecting right?
According to PFF he was an absolute monster in the slot with an outstanding 96.5 grade, which shows he can line up anywhere on the field and still produce big time for the Buccaneers.
In 2020, I honestly expect Chris Godwin to have close to the same production, and possibly even better with how much he produces from the slot.
Please don't leave us…

Selecting a guard 6th overall was a bold movie for second year GM Chris Ballard, even one as highly touted as Quenton Nelson. Casual fans hated it, while draft junkies loved it. Two years later, it’s become clear that the pick was a home run. Nelson’s selection single handedly turned around a unit that was largely responsible for a slew of injuries to Andrew Luck into one of the best units. Nelson’s second year was only better, cementing himself as one of the best guards in the league, a true road grader. He spent the past year terrorizing nfl defensive lineman en route to his second pro bowl and all pro selections. Plus, he pulled off what was by far the best touchdown celebration of the season

#17 - Jamal Adams - Strong Safety - New York Jets

I would just like to start with a moment of silence for the fans of the New York Jets after Jamal Adams recently demanded a trade from that inept organization with a dumpster fire of a coach in Adam Gase.
Anyways, after an incredible sophomore season, Adams has kept up with his awesome play in his third season as one of the NFL's best and most versatile defensive players as well as the clear-cut best player on a football team that somehow won seven games. Adams, also known as President 'Mal, recorded an interception (which was returned 61 yards to the house), 7 passes defended, 11 hurries, and 36 stops, but that's not all! Adams also garnered 6.5 sacks (which is amazing for a DB) and forced two fumbles (like this one he returned to the house on my guy Daniel Jones 😔). With his exceptional play, the star safety was named to the 1st Team All-Pro as well as his second Pro Bowl selection (an honor which none of his other Jets teammates got this year).
What makes Adams so special is that he is exceptional against both the running and passing game. Whether he's with Gang Green or another franchise next year, I'd expect another stellar season out of Jamal Adams in 2020 (assuming there is one) and even as a Giants fan who watched him dominate my team this past season, I really appreciate the guy's play.

DERRRRIIIICK HENRY!!!
This part man part tractor was the plow that turned our barren field into a bountiful wheat field full of Nashville Hot Chicken. This beautiful muscly man with a poop rat tail decimated opponents and General Sherman'd the ^AFC South. Totaling at 1540 yards and 16 Touchdowns in 15 games, with 6 coming from a slow start in a Mariota lead offense, he caught fire and dragged his nuts all over teams like the Chargers, Chiefs, Jags, Colts, Texans, Raiders and was showing just absolute dominance on the field. (Sadly we arent able to take the playoffs into account otherwise i'd gush over how he embarrassed a couple of scrub one and done teams).
Henry has this certain tenacity and a godlike level of endurance that just makes him an absolute beast in the 2nd half. He is just able to keep going, and going, and going, until finally, players get tired of it and turn into lead blockers for him. He is extremely hard to tackle to. Take a look at this play against the Chiefs in week 10, guys just bounce off him like he's running through toddlers. Derrick Henry is so hard to tackle that, according to PFF, Henry had over 1200 of his 1540 total yards after contact. Like this dude was getting hit at the line of scrimmage and he is just like, fuck this shit, i aint no dion lewis, and keeps going. How is this guy even real???
Another thing about Henry is his speed! Henry is a 6'3" 240 pound dude running 20+ MPH down the field when he breaks the open one. Like look at this speed he gets vs the Browns in week 1. Or this one against the Jags where he outruns guys and stiff arms the ones who barely managed to keep pace. Speaking of stiff arms, Derrick Henry has one of, if not, the BEST Stiff Arm in the league. If I had to pick a way to die, I think I would like Henry to stiff arm me in the face running at me at 21 miles per hour with this face, because there would be no greater honor to a titans fan than death by Henry. #15 - Travis Kelce - Tight End - Kansas City Chiefs

Travis Kelce was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2013 draft. He wound up missing his rookie season due needing to receive microfracture surgery on his knee over the offseason and dealing with a bone bruise during the season. Since then he's received 4 All-Pro designations and was named to the NFL 2010s All-Decade team. He's also become the 1st TE in NFL history to have 4 straight 1,000+ yard seasons. Not bad considering how his career got started.
In 2019 he finished his 2nd straight season of 1,200+ yards and 3rd straight season leading the league in deep receiving yards by a tight end (274). He finished top 4 in overall TE grade for the 4th straight year (85.1), and was named to his second 2nd-team All-Pro designation. In the Sunday Night Football contest against the Chicago Bears he caught his 500th career reception, becoming the fastest TE in NFL history to reach that mark.
There's no doubt that Kelce is one of the best tight ends in the game, and winding up in the top 20 proves many believe him to be one of the very best players in the league. Since Gronk's decline it's essentially been between him and George Kittle for the top player at the position. He's a key component of what Andy Reid and the Chiefs like to do on offense, even as stacked as the offence is. With a Super Bowl victory and a few records to his name already his legacy will be decided by how long he can keep up his premier play. His partnership with Patrick Mahomes should take him to a locked up Hall of Fame bust.

#14 - Ryan Ramczyk - Offensive Tackle - New Orleans Saints

In 2017, sb nation wrote an article claiming that Ryan Ramczyk wasn't a first round talent at LT. The site went so far as to say he would benefit from a switch to RT. In short, they ended up nailing that on the head. The three-year vet has spent almost the entirety of his career anchoring the right side of the Saints O-line after being picked at 32 overall, and boy, has it worked out for both the team and the Wisconsin alum.
Ram makes the /nfl top 100 list for two reasons. First, he was really good. Second, we really wanted to hammer in the idea that the Saints O-line as a whole was really good. Most notably, Ram exits the 2019 season with his first first-team all pro, and he was more than deserving of it. Similar to teammate Terron Armstead, Ram refused to allow Brees or Teddy to be touched, giving up no sacks on the season. Even better, Ram kept his QBs almost squeaky clean in the pocket, allowing just one hit on the entire season, good for 2nd best in the league among nominated tackles. And Ram didn't just do well in pass pro; he was PFFs top graded OT when run-blocking, showcasing his power and quickness from his spot. In total, Ram spent the 2019 season as the biggest challenge for opposing D-lines to overcome when facing the Saints.

#13 - Julio Jones - Wide Receiver - Atlanta Falcons

It's a bird, it’s a plane, no it's Jet Jones! In his 9th season Julio continues to be one of the most dominant receivers in the NFL, and the undisputed best player on the team. He’s a force that defenses must give their full attention, and even then he can explode. Even when he doesn’t get the ball, his influence and abilities still shape the play, and better everyone around him. This past offseason Julio agreed to a three-year contract extension worth $66 million, making him the NFL’s highest paid WR, and extending him to 2023. Even though 2019 was a down year statistically, Julio continued to show why the money is worth it. In a “down year” Julio was 2nd in reception yards, 3rd in Yards/Game, and 1st in Scrimmage Yards/Touch, and made his 6th consecutive Pro-Bowl.
But stats can hardly capture the elite combination of athleticism and skill that makes Julio so great. A combination perfectly captured here where Julio is able to jump over the coverage of CB Leodis McKelvin and then tiptoe to complete the coverage on the way down. Later that same game, with the Falcons against the wall, Julio showed that no man can catch him in a 53-yard burst (shoutout to Jake Matthews for the Pancake Block). Julio utilized his route skills to make CB Pierre Desir eat turf before making a 34-yard reception; which likely would have been much more if Ryan didn’t underthrow it. He’s pretty good at catching too, exhibited as reaches over CB Quincy Wilson and manages to hold onto the ball through tackles from Wilson and SS Clayton Geathers to score. Doesn’t matter who you are, Luke Keuchly, Marshon Lattimore, AJ Bouye; doesn’t matter. bUt hE dOEsn’T gET tOUchDoWnS I hear the Fantasy owners say. Watch this and notice how often in the redzone Julio is serving to support his team (blocks, inside presence, taking double defenders), or is just ignored. He’s open more often people realize.
Even in a disappointing season for the Falcons, Julio continues to shine through as one of the NFL’s premiere combos of athleticism and skill. Julio is and will continue to be an absolute force for the offense.

In my write up of ChanJo last year, I mentioned that the return to the 3/4 (even if it's under Vance Joseph) will be huge for his stats. And boy howdy was it! At 30 years old and after double digit sack totals for 5 straight years, Jones set a career high of sacks at 19 this year. He had 8 Forced Fumbles, 53 Tackles, and 26 QB hits. Most of his stats improved from 2018, some more drastically than others. His pass coverage marginally improved but why the hell would you really want him to cover guys? (Don't say it Niners fans, DON'T SAY IT)
Chandler Jones is the prototype for edge defenders. He is what all other Defensive Coordinators wish they had. Strong, fast, smart, consistent. Here's a guys opinion and a breakdown. Here's some highlights because not everybody watched all 16 Cardinals games last year and I don't blame them. I think he will rank even higher next year if he stays healthy because he will finally get to settle into a defense again. Even if it's Vance Joseph's.

Where to begin with Ronnie Stanley? Oh, how about a nearly minute long clip of him absolutely bullying First Team All Pro and NFC DPOY Chandler Jones. You like that? (Sorry Cards fans, but hey we all know Chandler Jones is a beast). Ronnie Stanley was the best LT in the league. No wait, actually he was the best overall tackle in the league. Actually, Stanley was the best lineman in the league, bar none. I truly believe Stanley was a top 5 player in the NFL last season and even tried (and failed/came to senses) to argue Stanley as a top 2 player. His dominance on the left side of that line was unprecedented.
I know stats don’t paint the entire picture, especially for OL, but I have to start there because his stats were unworldly as a blindside protector facing the best pass rushers the NFL has to offer. Going against the likes of TJ Watt twice a year, Carlos Dunlap twice a year, Myles Garrett, Chandler Jones, Nick Bosa, Shaq Barrett (need I go on), he allowed zero sacks and six pressures on 445 pass blocking snaps. Of tackles with at least 400 pass blocking snaps to allow 6 pressures or less, he was the only one. Wait, the only one? Let’s expand. 10 pressures on 400 snaps? Hmm. Only Ronnie Stanley. 15? Hmm only Ronnie Stanley. 20 and no sacks? Only Ronnie Stanley. Unreal.
So how does he do it? Well for starters, he has an elite pass rusher’s explosion as an offensive lineman. He can pack a pop that will knock the best rushers off line or on their ass without overextending. Just ask Nick Bosa. Refer back to the Chandler Jones lowlight reel for a second and check out how often he simply beats Jones (one of the most explosive and best bending edge rushers in the game) to his spot time and time again. Stanley is out of his stance so fast it looks like he’s false starting and, be it film review/sixth sense/sheer athleticism (my money is on all three), he hits the pass rushers’ marks before they do. Sometimes, he even chips defenders to the ground he doesn’t have a responsibility for. Because of these reasons, he’s basically the only lineman in the game not playing catchup and is tremendously equipped to react to counters. In the run game, he was a driving reason behind that team’s record setting running success. He can be a mauler, but with his speed also can pull like the best guards in the game and lead block for some of the fastest players in the game.
At the end of the day, his dominance in both pass blocking and run blocking makes him a worthy top 15 player, and if not for a tendency to underrate linemen, I believe he should’ve been a shoe-in for the top 10. If you read this far, thank you. Now I need to go puke after that glowing endorsement for a Raven.
