5 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 156)

Welcome to the first of these mobile game recommendations posts of 2021! :) I've got no less than 5 great games lined up today, so let's waste no time and just dive in.
This episode includes the League of Legends mobile MOBA, a fun cyberpunk-themed arcade racer, one of the best platform action games I’ve played recently, a casual simulation game about destroying planets with freaking lasers, and a fun action game that mixes puzzle and dungeon-crawling elements.
Disagree with my opinion? Let’s have a friendly discussion below.
New to these posts? Check out the first one from 156 weeks ago here.
The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

Let's get to the games:

League of Legends: Wild Rift [Game Size: 2.7 GB] (free)

Genre: MOBA / Action / PvP - Requires Online Access
Orientation: Landscape
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review: [For some reason NOT out in the US yet]
League of Legends: Wild Rift is Riot Games’ mobile version of the massively popular PC MOBA, League of Legends. Most notably, its 5v5 matchmaking is incredibly fast, there are already 40+ unique heroes, and the graphics look great without overheating my phone.
While there are plenty of MOBAs on mobile, Wild Rift had the best on-boarding experience I’ve tried to date, jumping straight into the action instead of forcing us through lengthy tutorials. And this while still being mindful of explaining the core mechanics as you play your first matches versus AI.
Unlike some MOBAs, the combat is nicely paced in Wild Rift, with each match taking roughly 15 minutes, which is perfect for mobile. The lack of annoying pop-ups with quests and login rewards is also a welcomed change.
Just like its PC counterpart, the monetization is very fair. The heroes are well-balanced, which means we can easily compete with the heroes we get for free, while purely cosmetic skins and additional heroes can be bought through iAPs.
Wild Rift is by far the most polished, fair, and overall most promising MOBA I’ve played in years.

Nameless Cat [Game Size: 92 MB] (free)

Genre: Platformer / Action / Indie / 2D - Offline Playable
Orientation: Landscape
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review:
Nameless Cat is a beautiful 2D action platformer with a mysterious story, lots of interesting obstacles and enemies, and even boss battles that we must overcome without being able to attack.
One of the game’s most unique features is the ability to teleport to what looks like tombstones that are found throughout each level. This mechanic is used to avoid enemy attacks, travel distances that are too far to jump, and teleport away from traps, creating a fun experience that feels different from most other action platformers.
The peaceful soundtrack perfectly fits the distinctive pixel art-style and creates a truly calming and peculiar atmosphere that makes the game a joy to explore. As we complete the 40+ hand-crafted levels, we also collect cans of cat food used to unlock new cosmetic cat skins.
The game monetizes through occasional ads between deaths and incentivized ads to activate some of the checkpoints, both of which can be removed through a $2.99 iAP. $0.99 iAPs allow us to unlock additional premium skins.
Nameless Cat is a must-play for any fan of cute, challenging, action platformers.

Neon Flytron [Total Game Size: 118 MB] (free)

Genre: Arcade / Racer / Endless / Indie - Offline
Orientation: Portrait
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review:
Neon Flytron is a forward-movement arcade racer where we control a flying car blasting through a cyberpunk-themed city full of neon lights, skyscrapers, and obstacles in both level-based and endless game-modes.
Unlike lane-runners like Subway Surfers, Neon Flytron’s smooth controls let us freely move up, down, left, and right to avoid obstacles, defeat bosses, and pickup powers-ups or gold. Combined with the futuristic soundtracks and shiny art-style, this makes for a truly unique experience.
Arguably the game’s most unique feature is just how customizable everything is. Vehicles can be painted with different materials and colors, a custom game-mode lets us heavily alter and control the gameplay experience, and the map editor even allows us to fully customize the colors used for buildings, windows, and more. All customizations cost gold, which we earn through gameplay.
Monetization happens through occasional forced ads that can be removed through a $1.99 iAP, incentivized ads to revive or increase our gold rewards, and iAPs for more gold used for customization and to unlock all cars immediately. The monetization isn't heavily pushed, and the game can easily be enjoyed as a free player.
Neon Flytron is a runner that doesn’t feel like any other endless runner, and that’s why it’s worth checking out for arcade cyberpunk fans.

Yokai Dungeon [Total Game Size: 58 MB] (free)

Genre: Puzzle / Dungeon Crawler / Acrade / Action - Offline
Orientation: Portrait
Required Attention: Some
tl;dr review:
Yokai Dungeon is a cute and simple arcade action game where we fight our way through endless randomly generated dungeons by pushing blocks and bushes into enemies to defeat them.
Each dungeon floor consists of multiple rooms full of monsters and a boss at the end, and while we’re free to explore the dungeon in whichever order we prefer, we must defeat all monsters in each room before we can proceed to the next. Monsters drop gold that we can spend to unlock cute heroes with unique health, speed, and luck stats.
The controls are a bit wonky and combat gets slightly repetitive after a while as our only offensive ability is to push blocks. But apart from that, it’s a fun mix of puzzle and dungeon crawling that works well as a casual game.
Yokai Dungeon monetizes through frequent ads between dungeon rooms, which can be removed with a $2.99 iAP, and additional iAPs to unlock heroes faster.

Solar Smash [Total Game Size: 128 MB] (free)

Genre: Simulation - Offline
Orientation: Landscape
Required Attention: Little
tl;dr review:
Solar Smash is a simulation game about destroying planets and entire solar systems by altering the orbit of each planet until they collide or by using a range of over-the-top crazy weapons from rockets and lasers to alien spaceships and Cthulhu-like creatures.
The game plays like a sandbox experience, with full freedom and no overall objective or mission to complete. It’s a fun experience for short periods of time, although it quickly grows repetitive due to a general lack of gameplay modes, planets, and weapons.
The controls are decent, and the performance is alright, although explosions may sometimes cause lag even on high-end devices.
Solar Smash monetizes through occasional forced ads and a $2.99 iAP to remove these completely.

The End: The problems with MassForTheDead

Overview

Well, I'm sure everyone has seen the news. The end of MassForTheDead is upon us. I started in early November. After doing all the story quests and some other things I ended up with only 3 5-star people, and sort of quit because the odds were horrible. I can't remember the exact number of rolls, but I saved every single Choas Stone.
I quit around Thanksgiving, it isn't that the game isn't fun, but the odds were horrible and the prices made no sense. I will get into the problems with this game later, but eventually, I started back up before Xmas. I had better luck this time, while I didn't get any xmas people, but I had decent luck getting other 5-stars.
It's a fun game, but it has many problems. As a developer, I somewhat expected it to fail, but I really was hoping that it wouldn't. I actually mentioned many of the reasons behind it in my review on google play. I shared my review with a few others, but I didn't actually make a post about it. However now I guess it's the last chance I get. I hope that the creators of MFTD see this... because many of these problems I feel almost anyone could come to the same conclusion as me.
NOTE: My language gets a little spicy, do forgive me for not being PC.

Online Only

One of the biggest problems with the game is it being online only. This means that if the game servers are shut down... simply the game doesn't work. Meaning if the game ends in 3 months (like now) everything you have to spend was pretty much wasted. It isn't like steam where you can buy and sell skins or items... you buy a digital product with the potential chance of it being taken away from you at any time.
No one likes this... I would like to blame the devs, but typically it isn't them who make this decision. It's almost always someone higher up, but either way to be honest it was retarded.
It should have been an offline game, are at least playable offline people wouldn't have felt so bad by buying stuff, since they could still use it after the servers are shut down.

Multiple Versions

Having multiple versions of the game is stupid. Simply stupid. It is already hard enough for developers to support Android, Apple, and say the web... but now they need to support Android (jp), Apple (jp), Android (globe), Apple (global).
You rarely see this in western games... However, it is pretty common for Asian games. Rpgs especially almost always get a special global version. My only guess is because of location and language... however you should have designed your app to work with multiple languages. This is web dev 101, you space things out or have scroll bars or cut it off with a popup to give the full name or details. There are tons of ways around this... It's the same story with locations, you should have designed the online game from the ground up to be usable with multiple servers.
I don't want to go on forever about this, but it's basic things. Just add multiple languages, that was it. All you needed to do, yet tons of games every year get a "global" version just for it to die a few years later. STOP IT. Make 1 version, with servers globally. Not enough people in Germany?... shut that server down and move them to another server.
Sorry for the rant on this part, I've played at least 20 games they forced you to play the global version and ended up shutting it down after a year or 2. Honestly, at as dev it drives me crazy they do this. People don't care you have a special ____ holiday or whatever... AWESOME, cool you have a holiday about some cucumber god, ok let us play it, we don't need a second version.
I guess what I'm trying to get at... Crunchyroll shouldn't have been involved in the first place. Maybe as translators, but AAAaaah fuck me dude, why do they keep doing this?

Worse than Gambling...

You buy "chaos stones", which give you a chance to roll for people in the game. Aka gambling, but instead of getting a chance for money, you get a digital item that could disappear at any moment when they shut the game down. At least with gambling, you have a slim chance of getting your money back.
There have been many countries trying to put regulations on loot boxes in games... I'm pretty sure this game would eventually fall into that category. If they are not forced to change it, at the very least they will probably make it 18+ or the local equivalent. Some countries have been trying to force similar taxes onto these types of apps that casinos have to deal with. Potentially they are going to run into an issue with this game because of the random aspect.
They continue to make it worse by having "free" Choas Stones mixed with "paid" Chaos Stones. Honestly, I'm surprised some mom hasn't created a Facebook group about how it's tricking their children. Anyway, I don't care about this, but it is something to note, that this will probably be brought up against them later on.
I know some people will probably argue saying baseball cards, or pokemon cards are similar... however you are getting a physical object. You have it forever, you can sell it, trade it, lick it. It's yours forever. Yes, they are both random chances, but as I explained above... at any moment you could lose it. I could go on with other things, but I'm ranting, so we will leave this here.

Price

... do I have to explain this. The prices are INSANE, let's just forget about it being something you could lose at any moment or the random chance. There are many packs and things for $32.99. Let's look at one. 515 paid stones plus some other stuff. That is 1 roll or ten items... WHAT?!?
Look at any other game, even the MOST money-hungry games like Clash of Clash or Fortnite are 1/4 of this price... and they are games that have been around for years, with tons of content, and tons of game play, and large player bases.
It's like paying $30 goto a movie... or $15 to goto another movie at a better theater, that also in 3d. Don't get me wrong... I LOVE OVERLORD. I love it, I read at least 2 novels a month... but the prices for MFTD are just crazy. Personally, I bought VIP, I think that it's a decent price to support the game and help them developed it... but to be honest for $20 you don't shit. I understand they need to make money, but I 100% guarantee if they cut the price in half, they would more than double their sales. Many of the people reading overlord are younger in high school or college... I can't imagine they are looking forward to throwing down $32 for a roll at 10 cards? (or whatever you call it)... however $16? it far more reasonable. How many of would have bought a "pack" for $16 yet didn't because it was $32?
I'm an old (not really old, 31), and I didn't because it's a ripoff. I just feel like I'm getting bent over around back.

Summary / Horrible

LMAO, guys... honestly this game I love it. I love Overlord, but some of the ideas behind it were horrible. It isn't just 1 of them... but when you add them up all altogether I knew it wasn't going to last long.
What is even worse... they announced they are closing the game down... YET you can still buy shit. YOU CAN STILL BUY DIGITAL ITEMS that will be gone in 2 months. WHAT THE FUCK?!? Am I'm crazy, or is this just me or is this a total douchebag move?
They don't force you to see the notification, nothing pops up... just a quiet little whisper "psst, the game ends April". I will admit, they are at least shutting it down in march... Do they are not a complete scumbag... However, it should have been locked the moment they announced the ending of this game. People love this game, they are dedicated to it. They have spent thousands of hours grinding just to save up for the new stuff coming out next week. I'm sure there are people who just bought stuff yesterday...
What is even worse, I'm pretty sure someone knew about this at least a week ago. I can't imagine some CEO just say, yea I'm done, lets tell them today the game ends. There were meetings, discussions, multiple companies involved... probably a public relations person who spend a day to come up with that announcement.
I'm going to end it here, while I wasn't surprised I wish it continued or was offline as its a fun little game to play throughout the day.

Contests in Idle Tower Builder 1.1.9

Contests in Idle Tower Builder 1.1.9
Idle Tower Builder is our construction incremental game with embedded autoclicker, where every floor of the tower unlocks new unpredictable facility to boost your production. Today it received new update v.1.1.9 with a functionality of contests.
Idle Tower Builder menu
To start the contest, start the game, then open Menu -> Contest: Babel Tower. You will be given 3 options: 24 hours, 3 days and 1 week. As soon as you start the contest, your task will be to build the highest tower as possible within the selected timeframe.
Contest start options
While you are playing the contest game, your regular tower will not disappear. You can revisit it from Menu -> Babel Tower, receive your offline bonuses, make necessary upgrades, and then check the contest tower again.
As soon as the contest is over, you will be able to submit your results to #leaderboards channel of our Discord server. You can select your nickname before doing so.
Contest completion screen
Let's compete and discuss the best strategies!
Some hints:
The game has embedded autoclicker. And this autoclicker can be activated not only on the objects mentioned in the tutorial ;) For example, with it you can speed up the elevator, moonstone mining, clouds creation, gunpowder production, etc.
As Golden Bricks boost 3 elements of the game (production, click power, market prices), its effect is in fact cubed. Don't hesitate to restart your tower building to gain more Golden Bricks (while you still have time before the end of the contest).
The contest mode can be unlocked as soon as you have 10 Golden Bricks in your regular tower. To let you skip waiting, I'd like to give you the code for 10 Golden Bricks. Open Boosts -> Weekly Gifts and enter the code EO9TIMQ. You will receive 10 Golden Bricks right away, boosting your regular Babel Tower building and unlocking the contest mode. However, we still recommend you to complete at least 3 floors in the regular mode before starting the contest to understand the mechanics.
Idle Tower Builder (Android, iOS, PC) vs Babel Tower (HTML5)
Originally the game was written in javascript and released as a web game Babel Tower. But for better performance on mobile I decided not to wrap the js code, but to rewrite it in Action Script 3. So, mobile/PC version has different codebase than the HTML5. In term of features, Idle Tower Builder is someway ahead of the Babel Tower. I will move the machines from floors 16-20, skins selection and contest mode to the web version eventually.

A List of Open Source Applications

HI THERE! I’ve re-created this list, cleaned up some mess and placed many links to their respective sections. This list contains only FOSS apps and most of the links provided here will take you to GITHUB, GITLAB, F-DROID and PLAYSTORE.
I'll be adding some hearts beside each application
💖--App is active and is being updated frequently
💚--App is active but updates are a little slow. (Not THAT slow and definitely not dead)
💔--App is abandoned/dead. (Why are dead apps here? Answer: There are some humans out there who love to dig out a corpse and examine it😸)
💛--This link will take you to Playstore
💜--This app...is...uhhh...its either abandoned or the updates are slow as a sloth. IDK what's happing with these apps. (Sometimes its hard for me to point out the app if its abandoned because of the updates....some apps receive updates after a very long time and are not dead. The devs should archive the repo if they're not gonna continue developing it further)
These hearts will be added beside each username
💙--The user who suggested that particular app
❤--The DEV of that particular app
🌟SUGGESTIONS TO MORE FOSS APPS ARE WELCOME, when sharing the link for a FOSS app, place the colored heart beside it. I don’t wanna end up placing the wrong colored heart🌟
🌟If any application has a wrong heart beside it OR any link is incorrect OR any app is placed at the wrong section OR if any app goes closed source or turns shady then please do let me know. I'll fix/remove/correct it asap🌟
🌟One more thing...the apps under the sections are listed randomly. Neither of the apps in these sections are ranked from best to worst🌟

How I rooted my Lenovo Tab M8 + research on MTK chipset rooting (MAGISK)

INTRODUCTION
I have successfully rooted the Lenovo Tab M8. I would like to document this root, how I did it, and what I learned from it on this subreddit in order to give back to you folks for helping me in the past. This is going to be an in-depth guide which will hopefully help you understand the rooting process better, and help you troubleshoot if things go wrong. This guide is very detailed and overwhelming, but if you pay attention and read through it, I guarantee you'll be satisfied because you'll be able to not only root, but know what you're doing. This way, you don't have to go making all the mistakes yourself like I did.
Before you begin, I hope you have at least some experience with Linux, and the more general computer knowledge you have, the better. I try to make this guide n00b friendly, but it goes into a lot of nerdy detail. I also hope you're comfortable with command-line utilities and paths. If you don't know something, I have a list of helpful resources in the appendix. I was a n00b once too, and I can honestly say that this experience has turned me from a novice rooter to an actual rooter.

The Tablet
My device is a Lenovo Tab M8. More specifically it's a TB 8505fs I got at Walmart for 100 bucks. Pretty sure this is the identical model right here: https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/tablets/android-tablets/lenovo-tab-series/Lenovo-TB-8505/p/ZZITZTATB58
This thing is a pretty good buy. It's the perfect size for E-books, can still fit in a large pocket, has good stats for its price, and has a great battery life. Here are some of the stats you can obtain from the above link:
CPU: MediaTek Helio A22 Tab, Quad-Core, 2.0 GHz
32 Gigs storage, 2GB RAM. The stats are decent, especially considering the thing doesn't come with too much bloatware, so it's not weighed down very much. Nevertheless, I wanted to root it primarily for the educational experience, but also in order to De-Google this device.
Android OS: 10, upgraded from 9 against my will before I could root it. Upon doing some research I believe the root process is the same, although your stock ROM might be different.
The OS I was using was Linux Mint, although the process is the same on Windows except for how you download ADB.

PREPARATIONS
This tablet is great cuz you don't need to do anything special to root it. Its bootloader is unlockable by default. It's the usual process to unlock: just tap your build number to unlock manufacturer options and then make sure you enable USB debugging and OEM unlocking. Now, you can use adb to get into the bootloader, or you can use the hardware shortcut to enter the bootloader which is the usual power button + volume down key hold. You don't have to actually unlock the bootloader with fastboot yet, because I'll explain that later.
First, make sure you have ADB and fastboot installed. If you're on Windows you have to download it, so here's an official updated link for Windows, as suggested by comments: https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools
A better alternative is to use Linux; I did this entirely on Linux Mint. If you are on Linux, you can use your distro's package manager (in this case apt since Mint is Debian based, use sudo apt-get install adb and sudo apt-get install fastboot to download your tools from verified repos.
Next, get on your Lenovo tablet and download Magisk Manager. Here's a link to it, complete with downloads and information. I recommend reading it.The official GH link is https://topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/
IF YOU ARE DOING THE "NO PHONE HOME GOOGLE" CHALLENGE WHERE YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR LENOVO OFFLINE THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE ROOT PROCESS, YOU CAN INSTALL ANY apk VIA YOUR COMPUTER BY USING THE COMMAND adb -d install [package_name.apk] (the -d flag is for direct USB connection, refer to fastboot and adb guide posted at the appendix)
NOTE ABOUT SP FLASH TOOL: There is another way to root devices such as this one with MediaTek (MTK) chipsets using SP Flash Tool. Here is a link to it if you need, but we won't be using this method, as it's mainly useful if you cannot unlock/enter fastboot, which does not apply to the Lenovo M8. https://spflashtool.com/ Also in order to use this tool, you need the stock ROM and the scatter file for the device.

THE STOCK ROM
Anyway, the most important thing you'll need in order to root your tablet is a stock ROM. You can find a variety of stock ROMs right here, but make sure it matches your build number: https://firmwarefile.com/lenovo-tab-m8-tb-8505f
NOTE: MAKE SURE YOU DOWNLOAD YOUR STOCK ROM FOLDER ONTO YOUR ANDROID DEVICE FIRST, not onto your computer. If you download it onto your computer, transfer it to the device.
Alternatively, you may google your build number and try to locate your stock ROM that way. The stock ROM is the most important thing. It should contain boot.img, system.img, recovery.img, user-data.img, vbmeta.img, and a scatter file as well as a whole bunch of other things. Make sure your stock ROM directory has all that, and that it has your build number in there somewhere.
"What are the .img 'image files'?" you may ask. Those are partitions that you can flash with fastboot. For this guide you'll only need boot.img and vbmeta.img, but in the highly likely event that you end up in a bootloop, having these partitions can help you get OUT of a bootloop.

THE ROOT PROCESS
I chose the Magisk Manager patched boot image root method. It's pretty simple actually. Before proceeding, make sure you are all set with the preparation step. The general idea behind this root is that Magisk patches a boot image, which you flash to the boot partition. This custom Magisk image contains your su binary and custom kernel. If you haven't installed Magisk Manager yet, you should do it on your device. You should know how to install an apk file. At this point, you should also have your stock rom downloaded on your device, preferably placed somewhere you can easily access it like the Downloads directory.
"What is the su binary?" you may ask...
su is the switch user binary in Linux, which allows you to take actions as the root account. Getting "su" on Android is the same as rooting. On an unrooted Android, it's not that you don't have permission to use the "su" binary; the su binary doesn't exist at all! Thus, if you want root, you gotta add it.
"What is Magisk?" a n00b might ask...
Magisk is a lot of things, but in this context it is a way to root your device without alerting the fascist Google safety net which will discriminate against your device just because it was rooted. Additionally, Magisk Manager will control which apps can use root once you have the su binary added. Indeed, Magisk was made by ingenious Russian hackers. :)

Patching your boot.img with Magisk
This part's simple. On your tablet, enter Magisk Manager and click Magisk, install, select and patch a file, then navigate to wherever your stock ROM directory is that you should have saved in Downloads probably, and find boot.img. This will make Magisk Manager patch boot.img, and create a custom boot.img that is named something along the lines of magisk_patched_boot.img. IT DOES NOT OVERWRITE YOUR STOCK BOOT.IMG, AND THAT'S A GOOD THING. I'LL EXPLAIN WHY IN THE RECOVERY/RESCUE SECTION. At any rate, if this is successful, your patched boot image is now in the same directory as the rest of your images. If you would like to know exactly what it's called, check the Magisk logs. If you're asking what the patched boot image is, you should read about how the boot image loads the kernel and the ramdisk. This patched one loads the su binary. If that doesn't make sense to you, don't worry about it.

Extracting your ROM directory
Now that you have your stock ROM directory, with the patched magisk boot.img in it, you need to transfer it to your computer. This is because fastboot works with image files which are on your PC, and not on your Android. There are a lot of ways as I'm sure you know to transfer a file from Android to PC: you can use Google Drive for instance, or a standard USB media connection. Unfortunately, Linux doesn't usually support direct USB communication for media transfer, so I recommend doing this using adb if you're on Linux. This is how you'd do it with ADB:
  1. Connect your Lenovo to your computer with a microUSB cable
  2. Ensure USB debugging is turned on in dev. settings, and that your device appears when you use the command adb devices -l . It will probably say "unauthorized" and that's OK. If it says that, just open up your Lenovo and hit "accept this computer's RSA key"
  3. Open up a shell using the command adb -d shell this is a Linux shell by the way, so I hope you know some basic Linux commands. If you don't you shouldn't be rooting. See appendix for a small guide. If you're too scared to use Linux, use a different method to transfer your stock ROM directory to your computer.
  4. Find your downloads directory, or wherever your stock ROM folder is. It should be inside your sdcard directory. Once you have the directory filepath, use adb -d pull [path-to-directory] to copy the directory to your current working directory in Linux.
  5. None of these steps are necessary if you're on Windows where you can just enable USB file transfer, or if you transfer the directory some other way like via internet or SD card. You can get creative here, it doesn't really matter. The end result must be that you have your stock ROM directory, together with the patched boot image, on your computer disk somewhere.
NOTE: to use adb or fastboot on Windows, you must open CMD in the directory where you have them installed. This is probably where your stock ROM image is going to be pulled.

Unlocking your bootloader
This step is pretty straightforward, and can be done at any point once you get into developer mode and hit "enable OEM unlock." This must be done before flashing your patched image, however. At this point you probably have your patched boot.img together with your stock images inside your stock ROM directory, on your computer's hard drive. If you don't, refer to the guide above. Alternatively, you can unlock your bootloader first. It doesn't matter.
In order to unlock the bootloader, you need to get into fastboot mode. For a reference of fastboot commands, check the appendix. You can get into fastboot either by powering the device off and using the hardware key shortcut (power+vol down hold) or by connecting your tablet via USB and using the adb -d reboot fastboot command.
At this point, your Lenovo's screen should be black, and it should say FASTBOOT MODE at the bottom. This is good. You can use the fastboot devices command to see if your device is being seen. If not, you might need drivers, but I didn't have to install drivers on my Linux Mint machine. In order to unlock your bootloader, you must now use this command: fastboot flashing unlock. Your tablet will prompt you for confirmation. Accept it and wait for the success message. When you reboot your device again, for instance with the command fastboot reboot , you should see the message "ORANGE STATE, YOUR DEVICE HAS BEEN UNLOCKED AND CANNOT BE TRUSTED." That's a good thing, it means progress.

Flashing the patched boot.img
This is the part where you actually overwrite your boot partition on your tablet. Beware, this is also the part where you're most likely to enter a bootloop, although I will explain how to get out of said bootloop in the rescue/recovery section. So, get your device into fastboot mode again. This can be done with adb -d reboot fastboot or through the hardware shortcut.
Once your device is in fastboot mode, navigate your computer to your stock ROM directory. If you're on Windows, I suggest putting your stock ROM directory into the same directory as your ADB and fastboot. Fastboot flash syntax is: fastboot flash [partition_name] [path_to_image_file_on_local_machine]
In order to flash our custom patched boot.img, we must first disable the verified boot verification. IF YOU DON'T DO THIS, YOU'LL END UP IN A BOOTLOOP! If you forget the --disable-verification flag, you will end up in a bootloop! I warned you! More info on VBMeta here: https://source.android.com/security/verifiedboot
Disable verified boot by using this command: fastboot flash vbmeta --disable-verification ./vbmeta.img where ./vbmeta.img is the path to your vbmeta.img file. It may be a little different, for instance if you're on Windows you use backslashes \ and not forward slashes / to separate directories, so if you're in your fastboot folder it would be something more like fastboot flash vbmeta --disable-verification .\stock_rom_folder\vbmeta.img. Seriously though, I hope you know how relative and absolute paths work, for your own good. From here on out, I will assume you know how to use paths. If you don't, you should brush up on the basics before rooting.
Now that you've flashed vbmeta with the --disable-verification flag, you can flash your boot partition. Use this command: fastboot flash boot ./magisk_patched_boot.img where ./boot.img is the path to your PATCHED boot.img. Watch out, you have a plain boot.img which is stock, and you don't want to flash that one, even though if you do it's no big deal; you just have to flash your custom boot.img afterwards. Also, if for some reason this doesn't work, the original post I read actually flashed the patched_boot.img twice: once BEFORE flashing vbmeta.img with --disable-verification, and once AFTER. However, they said that only flashing it AFTER is required. I flashed it twice, once before and once after, and it worked. The key is that you flash your custom boot image AFTER you flash vbmeta.img with --disable-verification. This is because Android Verified Boot (AVB) will not allow you to boot from your patched boot image if you allow it to verify it cryptographically, as it lacks the key. Check the verified boot link above for more info on that.
At this point, if everything went well, you can use fastboot reboot to boot your Android. It might take a while longer than usual, but once you boot, you should be rooted.
NOTE: Both adb and fastboot are tab-friendly. If you know how to use tab-autocomplete, it can help a lot as you're doing all this.

I HAVE ROOT, WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW?
If you followed the above guide, you should be able to give and revoke application root permissions using the Magisk Manager app you installed earlier. Google Play Store should still be usable. At this point, I would check if you actually have root on your device. There are a lot of ways to do this, but a safe one would be to connect your tablet via USB to your computer and open a shell with adb -d shell, and try to use the command su to switch user. It should lag a little and not let you, but you should get a pop-up question on your tablet asking if you want to grant the program "Shell" root permissions. Go ahead and do it, this is a safe program. It's your Android's internal shell. Now you have root privileges when you connect an ADB shell. Try using su again, and it should work. Alternatively, download any app that asks for root permissions and see if it works. Careful though, giving any app root permissions is a good way to get into all kinds of trouble. Many times you think you're the one hacking, but you end up being the one who gets hacked.
Now that you have root, you can go wild. The limits are up to your imagination and skill. I went about getting rid of every piece of Google spyware and adware on my tablet. I also installed hardware-identifier spoofing apps which allow me to change my MAC, my bluetooth MAC, and my IMEI. These are powerful privacy measures; so powerful that the mods of this subreddit might not even like that I mentioned them. It's not illegal, and it's fair game, mods! This tablet can't accept a SIM card!
BEFORE YOU GO CRAZY, please read my recovery section. For the love of god, back up your data before you proceed with doing anything to the system partition, or giving anything besides Shell root access!

RESCUE/RECOVERY
I'm stuck in a bootloop!
So you bootlooped. No big deal. I bootlooped multiple times and figured out how to rescue my device, and now I'll pass that knowledge on to you. It's an enriching experience to be honest. Here's the bad news: this Lenovo does not support TWRP custom recovery, and to my knowledge it doesn't actually have a recovery partition that you can access. In other words, adb -d reboot recovery sends you into fastboot mode.
Here's the good news: if you have your stock ROM, then you just have to flash the stock copy of whatever partition you think you messed up. Don't forget, the fastboot flash syntax is: fastboot flash [partition_name] [path_to_image_file_on_local_machine] so for instance in order to reset my system partition to stock, I would do fastboot flash system ./system.img , assuming I'm already in my ROM directory on my PC.
I made this nice mini-guide which tells you which partition you probably messed up, depending on your action, and what resetting said partition will do. When in doubt, you can flash all of the following:
boot partition
If you're flashing the stock boot.img on your device, it's probably because you are in a bootloop that doesn't even get to the lock screen of your device. If something is the matter with your boot partition, you should only see the Red Lenovo Logo, and it should NOT do the normal boot thing it does where it cycles through a bunch of images with random people doing exciting things which have nothing to do at all with the tablet such as BMXing. The major reasons for needing to flash boot.img are:
  1. Downloading the stock ROM for the wrong build. In this case, only flashing the boot.img from the correct build will revive your device. I hope you saved or wrote down your build somewhere.
  2. Forgetting to flash the vbmeta partition with the --disable-verification flag before flashing your magisk_patched_boot.img will send you into a bootloop, as I warned you before. If you forgot to do this, then you can just flash vbmeta.img with the flag shown above, and then flash your patched boot.img again. You do not need to touch vbmeta if you're flashing the stock boot.img
  3. Completely resetting the device. Keep in mind to lock the bootloader again, you must use the command fastboot flashing lock
fastboot flash boot ./boot.img is how you flash stock boot partition

system partition
If you're flashing the stock system.img, it means you've irreparably messed up your system partition. This can happen if you remove the wrong system app or package, or if you otherwise mess with the system files. This type of bootloop may appear almost exactly like the bootloop from a bad boot.img, but it can be characterized by your device trying to boot, but then going into fastboot mode.
By the way, system apps/packages are things like Google Play Services; the ones you can't remove on an unrooted Android. Removing these can be good for battery and to remove Google's spying, but it can send you into a bootloop so fast it'll make your head spin. This is why I recommend to back up your system.img (see below) before every attempt of messing with it. One wrong move and you have to start over. In fact, if you're an inexperienced rooter, I don't recommend messing with any system app until you read about the Android system and Google what each app/package you want to mess with does. With that being said, you can make a flashable backup image of your current system.img if you use the dd command. More info on that below in the backup options section.
fastboot flash system ./system.img is how you flash stock system partition. This will restore all system apps and services. It may fail to rescue the device unless you also flash the user-data partition, depending on how badly you messed up.

user-data partition
This is probably the most common bootloop. It's usually characterized by getting to your lock screen from boot, and the device shutting off. This happened to me because I installed an app from the Play Store which listed trackers on my device and could uninstall system apps, but people on the comment section were saying it caused bootloops. The device worked fine until I tried to reboot it, lol.
Flashing a stock user-data.img means you lose all your data. However, if your data isn't backed up, it's probably gone already unless you're a digital forensics expert and know secrets that I don't. This is why I advocate backing up your data, and discuss several ways of doing that in the following section:

[CUSTOM IMAGES AND BACKUPS]
"I have root, but I am afraid of going into a bootloop and losing all my data!"
Smart. If you don't have that concern, you should. I lost all my data a few times because I didn't back it up. Here, I'll discuss backup options so you don't have to start all over from square one. Much like most things in life, serious failure with a rooted device is best addressed BEFORE it actually happens, by using a backup! Here are some viable backup options, together with their use cases and information:
  1. Backing up user-data via USB on Windows: If you know how to connect your device to your Windows computer for data transfer, then you can back up the data on your user-data partition without doing anything fancy. This only works for the user-data partition, and does not create a flashable image.
  2. Backing up via adb backup is great, and allows restoring with adb restore. I'm not going to post about this in-depth, but if you're interested I suggest looking these commands and their syntax up. It's all in the man pages.
  3. Using a partition managebackup app. This is a risky idea because the app itself could have ads, or could bootloop your device. I don't recommend this method very much, especially for noobs. It may seem easy, but it's a good way to eat shit. Normally rooters flash TWRP to their recovery partition to do this, but this device doesn't support TWRP to my knowledge so we have to cope.
  4. [EXPERTS ONLY] Use dd to manually back up your partition. Watch out! This is the hardest, most dangerous, but also most rewarding way. They call dd disk destroyer for a reason! One false move and you're going back to square 1! You need to know your partition layout and you may need to unmount your partition! If you know which dev is which partition (there are utilities for this in Linux), you may do something like this: dd if=/dev/mtd/mtd1 of=/sdcard/recovery.img bs=4096 to backup your recovery image, assuming your recovery partition is in /dev/mtd/mtd1

"Please help, I messed up so bad I can't even get into fastboot and I have a bootloop!"
This is the point where you have to use SP Flash tool to unfuck your device. I've never fucked it up that bad, but I hear you can still rescue it if you use that tool.

That's it! If you enjoyed this, give me a like or something. I'm starting a Youtube channel too where I'll show you how this is all done. Oh, I'm not responsible for you messing your device up. That's on you. Oh, if you want me to do a root guide for your device, I only do MTK (MediaTek) chipsets, and my next guide will be for the Alcatel A30 where I'll be rooting it with the SP flash tool scatter file method. But do feel free to ask me to do some other device, I might just make a guide about it.

A little about me
I'm a computer science student with a passion for hacking and Android rooting. I've rooted many devices before, but this was my first one where I actually knew what I was doing. It's one thing to follow instructions or use a one-click-root security exploit app, but it's a whole other thing to do your own research and actually understand the process. One day I hope to work in the mobile security industry, but if I end up somewhere else, I feel like Android will always be a hobby of mine. I feel like rooting sets you free from the tracking device in your pocket. It is a way to keep private information like where you are at all times and what you do on your phone private, and to get rid of the "it's your phone but it's actually ours to do with as we please" mentality of Google. You don't have to agree with me here, but that's what motivates me.

[REQUEST] Looking for Squad-based RPG recommendations

Re-posting in compliance with the board's rules.

Hi All,
I did a lot of searches but I could not find what I was looking for, so I thought I would ask.
What I'm looking for:
- Squad-based tactical RPG with charactegeaskill customization Edit: just to clarify the squad-based tactical RPG. I'm thinking of a system where you have opposing parties standing literally in each other's faces in two rows. (or four in a front row, back row setup.) participants with diverse abilities, no tactical movement. the tactics is more picking the right party composition and use the right skills at the right time. FFT and XCom are excellent games in their own right but have "too muc" tactical movement, not something I can just play while riding a single metro stop.
- A quick jump-in, jump-out playstyle - something you can play for 5 minutes during a quick coffee break
- Grinding is fine
- Paid app is fine (or free-with-IAP-upgrade for a sort of "deluxe version", á la Cyber Knights Elite version)
- Single player gameplay (offline would be even better)
What I'm not looking for:
- Map exploration (not compatible with a few quick rounds of play when you lose track after not playing for a few days...)
- Any kind of microtransactions (except for the IAP outlined above)
- Action RPG (usually has no squad members, real-time gameplay isn't tactical, and usually involves exploration)
- Anything in first person mode (like The Quest)

Some examples and what my problem is with them:
- Sonny (ticks literally all the boxes but it's something I finished in two days, and you cannot buy your way out of the ads)
- Star Renegades (not available on mobile)
- Angry Birds Epic (microtransactions and a lot of idle time)
- Marvel: Avenger's Alliance 1 (microtransactions were bearable even though it had a lot of idle time, but this game was shut down a long, long time ago and all the spiritual successors got p2w even for PvE, like MAA2 - shut down -, or MSF)
- Cyber Knights (too much downtime and a lot of map navigation)
- Final Fantasy Brave Exvius (oh boy those microtransactions; full rng roster building)
- Heroes of Dragon Age (... even more microtransactions; full rng roster building)
- The "original" FF series (too much exploration, hard to jump in and out - I have most of them but I cannot really find the time to properly play them. I finished some but I don't want to start another one.)
- KotOR or any of the Beamdog games (neither are really good to just quickly jump in and out; plus I played all of them multiple times on both PC and Android. modding them is painful and controls on mobile are straining my carpal tunnel.)
Any recommendations?
Cheers,
-blarke
Edit: Disgaea is exactly what I was looking for, thanks all!

Mobile is the Mos Eisley of gaming: A wretched hive of scum and villainy where devs seem to have carte blanche to screw their customers over without consequence.

It's no secret the reputation mobile gaming already has for the most greedy, scammy, money hungry, manipulative monetization strategies in gaming. As bad as that is, I understand to a certain point it's buyer beware and if people still want to fork money over willingly well that is their choice. However this post is not even about that aspect of mobile gaming whatsoever.
I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 which at the time I purchased in the summer of 2016 was the best Android tablet I could find available. So it's been out a few years but it's not that old yet. Since I got this tablet I bought a number of games for it that obviously at the time of purchase were compatible and working perfectly on my device. I already avoided any F2P or online only titles for the most part for the obvious reasons related to my above statement, so I tried to be smart with my money and only buy full standalone games or games that may have an online component but also an offline standalone to try to steer clear of shady monetization practices.
Now even after taking those efforts I find myself being screwed over by lazy developers that can't be bothered to continue support for the devices customers have forked over their money in order to play their games on. I have too many games which since purchasing have become "Incompatible with this device" some within a matter of months after purchase, others longer but that shouldn't matter. Developers should be responsible to keep a working product available for customers who've purchased their product within a reasonable time period afterwards, at least somewhere within the range of the life cycle of your average gaming console, where developers still provide support for games even years after the next generation is available in many instances. If they put out updates that break the game on previous devices then then older versions should be made available that still work on those devices for customers who've already forked their money over to play the games. After all as I stated most of these games are not online or MP so there's no reason to prevent those who've previously paid for a working version from continuing to have access to a working version on their devices.
Can you imagine buying a game on PC or console only to come back to play on that same device you purchased working games on only to find an "Incompatible with this device" notice and you are now unable to play that game anymore? This shit doesn't happen on PC or Console because there would be an uproar yet for some reason in many instances those same exact devs who make the effort to update PC games to stay compatible on older hardware and be compatible with newer hardware could give a flying fuck about making the same efforts for anything mobile related. It's absolutely ridiculous and it should be fucking illegal!
And it's not only gaming either, I have a subscription to Netflix but I'm unable to watch on my tablet for the same bullshit reasons. I even went to the effort of finding an older version that matches the android OS on my tablet and should work but when I enter my valid credentials it says they are invalid and I can't log in. I called Netflix and take a wild guess what they said? "Your device is incompatible". Wow! Really so I can go download any number of pirate streaming software that allows me to watch all the same content for free if I want to and the developers of those programs can manage to keep compatible versions available completely for free but Netflix who I pay a fucking monthly subscription to can't manage to do the same? Seriously WTF, this isn't even incompetence it's a complete disregard for paying customers!
And it's usually the bigger name developers that are the prime culprits while smaller indie devs actually seem to value their customers. On top of all this every single time I leave a negative review stating my completely legitimate grievances and reasons for disappointment with a game & it's developers. The review magically disappears within the same fucking day! They can put the effort in to censor negative reviews but can't be bothered to show paying customers the respect to at least value their negative opinions or even provide a proper service.
There's another big issue with mobile: reviews are either fixed like this or they bother you with pop-ups to go leave good reviews for a game in the initial stages before you get to the part where P2W or some other BS kicks in and you are bound to have a far lower opinion so you get all these complete shit games with great looking reviews to keep a steady flow of suckers coming. So many scummy scamming practices on mobile it's ridiculous. Anyway I digress, the end result of all this is that I have sworn off mobile gaming altogether, I no longer have any confidence that I can pay for a product and expect to still access a working version of it within a year or two from the time of purchase.
To the mobile devs who although there seem to be no consequences for scumbag behavior on mobile platforms yet still make the effort to keep your games compatible and your customers happy and not behave like scumbags, you are appreciated but unfortunately I'm giving up on mobile altogether because of all the assholes who've taken my money and eroded all trust yet face no consequences for their actions.
From me to all you dirtbag lowlife mobile developers, here's a sincere FUCK YOU! I hope karma gives you all of the things you've earned and so rightfully deserve!
Rant over.

January 2021 Game of the Month - Pinball: Revenge of the 'Gator

Congratulations to... nobody on beating either Virtua Fighter 3tb challenge. Damn that game has a high learning curve lol. It took me until now to get around to giving out the Yoshi's Safari flairs though so shrug? This month is a much easier game. You've played pinball games and here's a cute fun one on the Game Boy! And of course, as always, y'all still have another 24 hours to complete the Virtua Fighter 3tb challenge and still get a flair.
Edit: And, for the first or second time, someone has completed the challenge within that window. Congrats to u/LaserPH for completing the offline Virtua Fighter 3tb challenge

Pinball: Revenge of the 'Gator

  • Developer(s): HAL Laboratory
  • Publisher(s): HAL Laboratory
  • Platform(s): Game Boy
A kickass pinball game featuring a kickass 'Gator theme. Made by HAL, who did the later Kirby Pinball Land, so you know this is good.
-/v/'s Recommended Games Wiki
While some of the later pinball titles like Kirby’s Pinball Lab and the subsequent Mario and Pokemon pinball adaptations pulled in a wider audience, Revenge of the Gator (which was still under the development of HAL Laboratories) is one of the best best pinball experiences on an early Nintendo handheld. There is a nice amount variety: one of the bonus challenges is reminiscent of Arkanoid while another involves timing your flipper shots play Whack-A-Mole with gator heads. The end result feels like a true video pinball classic like the Crush series on the TG16 and does pretty well with physics. There is a decent amount of weight to the ball, and you don’t ever feel cheated when you do end up dropping down into the maws of the alligator that lurks beneath the flippers.

Emulation Information:
Game Boy Emulation General Wiki page
I recommend SameBoy on PC and My OldBoy! on Android. To enable colors on the former, go to emulation options and set it to Game Boy Color or Super Game Boy. To enable colors on the latter, go to Video Settings and set GB palette to Dark green or Brown.
This game is available on 3DS for $3 so if you want a legal copy of the rom without needing the cartridge and special hardware, you should be able to buy it on the eShop and follow these instructions and get the rom from the romfs/rom folder, just rename the extension to .gb. You can of course just play it on 3DS without doing all that too if you don't want color.
If you'd like to play on 3DS with colors, download NSUI Beta 28 on PC, start a Game Boy project, load the rom, change the injection method to RetroArch Gambette forwarder, and in the Injection method options, Edit the core specific options to set GB colorization to auto. If you want to run NSUI on Linux, follow these instructions, but with dotnet452 instead of dotnet45 and with beta 28 instead of beta 27 https://gist.github.com/bmaupin/93d31e1b2d738ae656b9d3617e19622b

Check out the gotm channel on emulation discord server!

It's a high score month! Post a screenshot of your highest score and whoever has the highest score wins! Feel free to edit your link as you get higher scores throughout the month.

Do you guys know of a tactical turn-based RPG like the PSP game Jeanne d'Arc? (Mobile or PC)

Hi! I'll try my best to explain.
I'm looking for a game that's like Jeanne d'Arc PSP, its gameplay especially. It's PvE and your team starts from one end of the board and advance towards the other end, defeating opponents as you go along to complete a level. It's turn-based and you have a limit on the number of moves.
There's a system where you can make new skills by merging different skills, and it gets really hard to make stronger skills (which I like). It's historical fantasy but I don't mind other themes.
Jeanne d'Arc is a nostalgic game for me so hopefully I can get something close to it.
Thank you in advance!
(And please ask me further if you need more information)

Due to a glitch, it’s currently impossible to finish the game on any Xbox system

Edit #3 1/28/2021: Seems like this has now been fixed. Unclear if this thread helped that happen or not but either way I’m glad people can now finish the game as it was intended.
Edit #2 1/26/2021: I'm still seeing new posts about this issue every day and I'm adding links to them here. All of these posts suggest this is a very recent glitch preventing ALL Xbox users from finishing the game.
Edit #1: Look at the growing list at the bottom. It's not just me. Since I made this post, there have been multiple new topics and comments on this issue all within a single day. Please let me know of more examples and I will add them to the list below, to keep all the info in one place.
I have tried it on Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and even on xCloud via Android. On all systems, the game crashes out when connecting to the network on ending E. Some posts are also saying C, D, E but once you've played the game you know that all of these happen in quick succession so in reality, these comments are all referring to the same issue.
And since it's next to impossible for 99.9% of players to actually finish the game offline (I've only ever seen a few people in the world that have managed to do it), this is a problem. More than that, the network connectivity is a HUGE part of the experience that makes the ending so unique.
Is there any chance of Square Enix fixing this if they never even patched the game on PC? It’s really unfortunate that people can’t finish a game they paid for on Xbox right now, especially when a new game in the series is coming in a couple months.

Oculus Quest - Starter Guide / Safety Guide / FAQ / Megathread

This is all information from Ermac on cs.rin.ru. Most things here is also on the direct link here

Where do you start?

So now you are an Oculus Quest owner, and you are looking for ways to try patched games, we suggest you take safety measures first before trying out to sideload anything. Make sure to set up your device for sideloading and enable adb access from your PC. Here is a guide to get started: https://sidequestvr.com/setup-howto Once your setup is done, you can now make changes to the configuration of your Quest and your network settings to play safe.

Safety First

We suggest the following safety protocols to keep your account and device least tracked from Oculus and Facebook to prevent the account from getting flagged for piracy.
Here are the steps to add protection on your Quest from Facebook/Oculus:
Disable Telemetry:
What is telemetry? It's a bunch of services pre-installed in your Quest to log your game activity, playtime, etc. (records all of your library apps and everything sideloaded). You can disable telemetry on your Quest by running the following adb commands.
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.oculus.unifiedtelemetry adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.oculus.gatekeeperservice adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.oculus.notification_proxy adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.oculus.bugreporter adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.oculus.os.logcollector adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.oculus.appsafety
To do this, first install adb on your PC if you don't have already: https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=746010030569952951 You can run adb commands from SideQuest as well. Please note that this is a one-time setup, and telemetry will stay disabled when you reboot your Quest. You'll have to disable telemetry again after a firmware update or a factory reset.
Block Oculus/Facebook domains:
You can safely block these following domains in your router or a pi-hole device to throw off further tracking from oculus apps and services
oculus.com oculuscdn.com facebook-hardware.com facebook.net facebook.com fbcdn.com fbsbx.com fbcdn.net fb.me fb.com crashlytics.com
You can also block graph.facebook.com, but this will break apps like Oculus venues.
Keep your Quest offline:
You don't really need to keep your Quest connected to WiFi to play most games. Try to keep your Quest offline whenever possible to prevent analytics services from calling home. Also, remember that whenever your Quest is connected with the phone app (while having WiFi off), it can collect some logs through Bluetooth and send them to oculus. So don't connect it to a phone app if it's not necessary.

How to play patched apps:

You can find all the patched apps for Quest and Quest in their own game topics in cs.rin.ru forum. Just use the forum search with simple queries like Oculus Quest to list all the related topics: search.php?keywords=oculus+quest&terms=any&author=&sc=1&sf=titleonly&sk=t&sd=d&sr=topics&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search
In the game topics, you can find download links for the games. We recommend using JDownloader2 to download from those links (it will bypass all kinds of ads and malware popups and will straight download all of them for you). Make sure to install the latest 7zip or WinRAR (Windows) or Keka unarchiver (MacOS) to extract the downloaded zip files (the common password for those is cs.rin.ru).
You can also get them from VR Pirates GUI (Telegram Needed)
So now that you have downloaded all the games, you'll need a way to install them. From the zip archives, you'll find apk and obb files. apk files are the installer for the games, and obb files are the game data files (assets and other stuff). You can install those games using either the Autoinstaller tool or SideQuest.
Autoinstaller (Windows): Extract somewhere on your computer. Copy the game apk and obb files into the same directory and run autoinstall.bat to install the game. Every time you are going to install a new game, make sure to delete the older apk and obb files from the Autoinstaller directory.
SideQuest (Windows/macOS): The official SideQuest detects patched apps and will block you from installing those. You can get the modded SideQuest v0.10.2 here: Win32 | Win64 | Mac which is modded to disable that feature. Just follow the standard sideloading guide to install anything through SideQuest.
Quest patched tool config: https://app.box.com/s/x5zlvxmfr0ai0cfflxzd6rl88skyl487. This is essential for the patched apps, which sets a username for you in the game. You can alternatively use the following adb command to set a username.
adb shell settings put global username MyUsername123
Where you replace MyUsername123 with your desired username, this is a one-time setup. You don't need to do this every time you install a game.
User.json file: This is just a simple text file to configure the username for those games which need it. Place the files in the root directory of your Quest (/sdcard/ in SideQuest). The text format for the file is like this.
{"username":"MyUsername123"}
Where you replace MyUsername123 with your desired username, this is a one-time setup. You don't need to do this every time you install a game.
Additional Quality of Life setup:
Now that you have installed patched games, you can run them from Unknown Sources anytime (Drop-down menu in the top right corner of your Home menu, select Unknown Sources from the option). But going into Unknown sources and launching sideloaded apps are not really that convenient. You can make it much easier to launch the apps with a third-party app launcher.
QuestAppLauncher: Download and install QuestAppLauncher (or we call it QAL) from here: https://github.com/tverona1/QuestAppLaunchereleases/ You can launch it to list all sideloaded apps
Keymapper: Download and install KeyMapper from here: https://github.com/sds100/KeyMappereleases/ Provide it the storage and accessibility permissions through the Settings app (Settings app is available in my Signature) so it can run without any problem. Configure keymapper to launch QAL on the Volume button hold. Now anytime you hold down the volume button, QAL will appear and list all the sideloaded apps.
Settings APK: Install settings APK fro your device: Quest 1 Quest 2 Use it to open the default Android settings app (which is hidden in Quest by default) to make necessary changes to your device or apps (Like giving apps storage permission, accessibility permissions, etc.). Please note that Oculus purposely botched some options in the Settings app on Quest 2 to prevent users from touching those (e.g., developer settings), so it may crash on certain options.
Total Commander: It's a file manager that you can use to install games right from the device. Added bonus is an option to open Android settings (so you don't need to install Settings apk). You can get it here: https://app.box.com/s/7f4presvf53d6tvxtt2rxkwkvj9btbqi
Amaze File Manager: Another file manager to install games and move files around in the device. You can get it from here: https://github.com/TeamAmaze/AmazeFileManagereleases/

Frequently Asked Questions:

No one knows. Oculus definitely tracks your app's usage through telemetry, analytics, and other means, and there is no way to prevent them all. You can log into your Oculus account in the browser and visit this URL https://account.oculus.com/data to see your tracked data (they are obviously not showing everything here). We recommend playing safe and follow our safety guide above to throw off trails from Oculus and Facebook as much as possible.
Just as I explained, playing online is not safe at all. Especially both Facebook/Oculus and the game developer may track down your IP address while you are playing multiplayer on a patched game. Play at your own risk.
Technically you cannot. But you can configure QAL to change the names and icons of all the sideloaded games shown up in it. Follow this guide to configure: https://github.com/tverona1/QuestAppLauncher
The version of the game you are trying to install is using a different signing certificate. Please uninstall the previous version and then install the latest version.
Oculus purposely disables developer mode after a firmware update. Go to your Oculus phone app and re-enable developer mode to make unknown sources available again.
You can run this simple adb command to uninstall games/apps while keeping the data
adb shell pm uninstall -k PACKAGE_NAME
Where you replace PACKAGE_NAME with the appropriate package name of the app. e.g., to uninstall Beat Saber, you'll have to run this command: adb shell pm uninstall -k com.beatgames.beatsaber
They have a mechanism in place where they would flag your account for piracy and then generate a token file in your Quest (which is called a killswitch_token). As long as this killswitch token presents in your device, it will be impossible to enable the developer mode (since when you connect your phone app to enable developer mode, it will check the token's presence in Quest). You can use your device further with a new account or a test account (https://developer.oculus.com/distribute/test-users/) but cannot enable developer mode anymore and cannot sideload anything through adb.
PC VR is fair game for all, and Oculus doesn't care much about piracy over there. However, I must warn you that Oculus Home app logs a lot of unnecessary info about your computer usage (including the titles of the opened windows, running background services, etc.). If you want to block all those info, find the log directories from Oculus in Appdata and change directory permissions so that no one can have write access to those folders, this will prevent them from collecting/sending logs about your PC usage.

If you have any more questions or commonly asked questions please ask here.

/r/Stadia's Feature Requests: A Compilation

So, here we are. Throroughly past the point of needing to convince people Stadia works.
But what does it still need?
I recently went through every post in the last month that was tagged with the "Feature Suggestion" flair and had more than one upvote. Here is every feature I saw being suggested. Let me know if you have any more!
Wishlist
The ability to add games to a wishlist, then receive info about them via notification when they go on sale or get updated.
Multiple Streams, One Screen
A great feature for when you want to play local co-op without dev support, or if you just want to watch your friends play.
Buy Claimed Games
Allow us to buy games we've already claimed! Maybe that game you love has gone on sale, but it's the only thing you play and you only play it at 1080 anyway, wouldn't it be great to buy it outright?!
Freeze and Resume
Let us freeze a game in place so we can pick it up at a later point. Discussions on this topic included this being a pro feature and how long it should last.
1080p Performance, 4k Stream
I'm paying for 4k, but my game is only 60fps in 1080p. Let me play the 1080p mode using the 4k stream so I can avoid those compression artifacts!
Search
It's a Google product.
Improved UI
Overhaul the UI now there are more than 25 games on the service - make it easier for us to find a game in our collection!
Physical Game Cards
Even your Grandma can get in on Stadia! Pop down to your local video game emporium and pick up a card with a code for Cyberpunk!
Revamp the Explore Tab
Update it or remove it, Google!
Gifting Games
In the spirit of the season, let us buy a game for a chum.
Save WiFi Profiles
Allow us to save multiple WiFi profiles so we can quickly switch the controller between them without needing to type the code in every time
Game Performance Transparency
Require developers to list the framerate on the store page.
Customisation
More profile options, more avatars, custom avatars!
Simultaneous Play w/ Family Sharing
PlayStation does it, why not Stadia? Let us play the same game as others on our family plans. Maybe just open it up for multiplayer modes?
Connect w/ Assistant
Press that Assistant button, ask it to connect to the TV, go!
Game Stats
Provide info on the number of monthly active players on each game's store page - although maybe a little too exposing?
Shopping Cart
Maybe I want to buy 15 games all at once! Damn you, Black Friday!
VR
A longshot, but some users are keen for VR support, or at least 2D VR support.
Offline Status
Boss mode.
Spectate Friends
Allow us to watch what our friends are up to. Fits nicely with Multiple Streams, One Screen.
Link Music Services
For when you want to listen to Lil Jon while driving around Night City.
Family Plan for Pro
Get every family member that crisp, 4k goodness. Higher price to reflect more users.
Lower Resolution Options
While the rest of us are clamoring for 4k, a couple of users want 360p!
Favourite Friends
Pin your favourites to the top of the list.
Play in Unsupported Countries
Open this up as an experiment and let people take the risk.
Touch Controls for CCU
Break out the touch screen controls so you can use your phone as the controller for games on the Chromecast. Great low budget solution.
Upload Saves
Great for if you started Cyberpunk on PC and want to move it here.

And some from the comments below!

Show Time/Battery % When Pressing Stadia Button

The Definitive Quest Piracy Guide

The Definitive Quest Piracy Guide
(THIS IS A PCVR AND QUEST PIRACY GUIDE)
So you wanna sail the seven seas of virtual reality?

Last Edited: 15/01/2021

In my continued attempts to quiet the spam of people begging for the quest game links, I've written up a guide towards obtaining it yourself instead of spamming threads asking for it on this subreddit.
^ I think i've accomplished this mission now :]
This guide shows you how to download and sideload pirated games on the Oculus Quest 1/Q2 as well as the best place to find pirated games for PCVR headsets or Quests connected through Oculus Link or any other wireless streaming solution.
Just to reiterate and stress this, DO NOT PUBLICLY POST LINKS TO PIRACY DOWNLOADS. BY DOING THIS YOU ARE RISKING THE SUBREDDIT AND ENTIRE PIRACY MIRRORS TO BE DELETED. I'm thankfully able to circumvent these rules by not providing *direct* links to downloads, but just pointing people to where they can access these downloads by themselves :)
I am not affiliated with any of the hosts of these links. Just someone in the community who knows the ins and outs trying to point noobies in the right direction and to (hopefully) slow down the subreddit becoming nothing but a cesspit of people asking the same question over and over. This also means don't come to me for help, I don't run any of this stuff. Either leave your problem in the comments for help or ask the Discord.
AND I DO NOT ANSWER DIRECT MESSAGES
QUEST 2 USERS: Not all Quest 1 games currently work with the Quest 2, please take a look at this spreadsheet before installing any games.
if you're here looking for a cracked version of Virtual Desktop, there isn't one. VD is uncrackable as far as I know. If you want a PCVR streamer for Quest, here is a free alternative.

WILL I BE BANNED FOR PIRATING GAMES?
As it stands right now, you won't be banned for pirating games. As of right now, Facebook has never issued any form of punishment to anyone for piracy.
If you feel weary when it comes to pirating games, you can take some precautions just to be safe.
"LVL 0: Do nothing, play cracked games online and offline
LVL 1: Play cracked games only when your wifi is turned off (still not safer since oculus sends logs)
LVL 2: Spoof games as random packagenames and only play with wifi off (safer, but still not 100% safe)
LVL 3: Play with wifi on but block all oculus and facebook domains through pihole or your router (even safer, still SOME game developers will see your ip trying to connect to their servers, using a fake dns does work)
LVL 4: Block quest external access to internet from your routepihole (only allowing stuff vd and file transfer between devices on LAN)"
- Zale Anderson, VRP Discord

PLEASE READ THIS GUIDE CAREFULLY TO NOT MAKE ANY MISTAKES
Also, if you're manually sideloading, DON'T USE SIDEQUEST. THEY HAVE AN APK BLACKLIST AND WILL NOT LET YOU SIDELOAD PIRATED GAMES. YOU CAN USE AN OLDER VERSION OF SIDEQUEST TO SIDELOAD BLACKLISTED APKS THAT CAN BE OBTAINED THROUGH RCLONE BROWSER, WHICH IS MENTIONED LATER IN THIS GUIDE

YOU WILL NEED:
Oculus ADB Drivers
An Oculus developer account with the Quest in developer mode (Tutorial)
EDIT: I've heard about recently that you now need a Credit Card to get a developer account for verification purposes. I don't know any way around this so I apologise if you can't make a developer account for this.
A Telegram Account (requires phone number, if you don't have one that's on you)
EDIT: you can use various websites that provide free phone numbers online, namely TextNow (US only but VPNs work) and FreePhoneNum. thanks to u/FlowV4 on this post for reminding me that these apps existed lol

Any device capable of sideloading to an Oculus Quest/Quest 2 (this guide will be directed to Windows 10 users as that's the main use case here, if you use something else then I think there are downloads on the Telegram for other operating systems. Keep reading to know how to get to the Telegram)
A USB Type C cable routing from your PC to the quest (to sideload games to the headset)
A Discord Account (NOT A BRAND NEW ACCOUNT: using a new account will get you instantly banned from the VRP Discord. This is a measure to prevent raiding/bots. I do not know how old your account has to be to join and I apologise for being unable to figure it out. I'd give it 14-30 days maybe.)

Step 1: Join the VRP Discord server. The invite link is a PINNED POST on this subreddit. When in the Discord server, head over to the #rules channel, read the rules and react to the bottom message to gain access to the rest of the server
you may use the #vrp-updates channel in the server to be notified when new games are added or games are updated on the download mirrors.
Step 2: Go to the #faq channel, scroll to the top and JOIN THE TELEGRAM (Telegram link is underneath " How to sideload with AndroidSideloader: " section. You'll have to download the Telegram application on your PC and make an account to get into the VRP Telegram.
Step 3: If you needed to download Telegram, revisit the Telegram link in the VRP Discord and using your account you just made/logged into, join the VRP Telegram chat. At the top of the Telegram interface you should be able to access the pinned message.

So at this point there are multiple methods here for quest piracy. I'm going to go through them here.

ROOKIE'S SIDELOADER VRP EDITION (AUTOMATIC SIDELOADING, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR NOOBIES)
On the Telegram's pinned message is an exe file for the Rookie's Sideloader VRP Edition installer. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND USING THIS TO PIRATE GAMES. It's a simple application that when downloaded and installed (IF WINDOWS/YOUR BROWSER SAYS IT'S A VIRUS, THIS IS A FALSE POSITIVE AND MEANS YOU NEED TO UPDATE YOUR VIRUS DATABASES TO STOP IT FROM APPEARING OR JUST ADD IT TO YOUR EXCEPTIONS.) and when launched, you can connect your quest to your PC, Select from a huge drop down menu of games and easily, with a couple of clicks, automagically download and sideload games to your quest.
If you get Rookie's Sideloader VRP and are prompted with an update on launch, accept the update and it'll be downloaded and launched on your PC. Games on the list are automatically added and updated at the rate they're cracked by the pirates.

RCLONE BROWSER (MANUAL SIDELOADING, RECOMMENDED IF USING ANY OTHER SIDELOADING METHOD, ALSO FOR PCVGEARVR GAMES)
On the pinned messages list, find the rclone browser part and click the link corresponding to the operating system you're on and (for Windows) you'll be redirected to a message containing a RAR file. Download that file, extract it and run RcloneBrowser.exe. You'll then be presented with 2 or 3 VRP mirrors, double click one of them and you'll be able to access and download APKs and OBBs under the Quest Games folder for manual sideloading, if thats your thing.
If the UI for rclone browser is confusing to you, refer to this short tutorial video. (when the game you chose is showing as running, wait until it says finished before sideloading)
WHITE WHIDOW SIDELOADER - NEWER, PRE-ALPHA ALTERNATIVE TO ROOKIE'S FOR MAC, LINUX AND WINDOWS
all info regarding WWS can be found here. includes download and installation guide
EXTRA, LIKELY NECESSARY INFORMATION
To manually sideload, use sidequest or rookies sideloader to access the quests file system and drag the "com.xxx.xxx" folder to the directory Android/obb then sideload the apk using the sideloading method of your choice.
Not all games need obb files so they won't come with them.
To access sideloaded applications, go to your Quest's library screen, on the top right select the drop down menu that says "All", scroll down and select Unknown Sources. From there you can access your sideloaded games and apps

UPDATING QUEST GAMES
To update your pirated Quest games, while keeping the current version of the game installed, download and sideload the new version of the game using your preferred method and your save data should stay intact with the new update installed
OTHER
rclone browser also provides downloads for other tools and options regarding your Quest and games. This includes:
App launchers spoofed as legit apps that can be launched from your regular library screen, eliminating the need to go to unknown sources
Method(s) to disable Telemetry tracking
Alternate sideloading methods such as older versions of sidequest that allow blacklisted apks, total commander for local sideloading and rookies sideloader vrp edition.
All the old Quest firmware versions and methods to downgrade
Previous versions of games
DLC for games
Modded/maxed out save files for games
GEARVR AND PC TETHERED VR
Rclone browser also provides downloads for GearVR and PCVR games.
The GearVR games should sideload fine onto a Quest but there is no guarantee that they will fully function. However I don't know how to play GearVR games on a PC using a PCVR headset
THE PCVR GAMES ARE TO BE DOWNLOADED AND PLAYED ON A PC WITH A PCVR TETHERED HEADSET OR A QUEST CONNECTED TO A PC WITH OCULUS LINK/VIRTUAL DESKTOP/ALVR.
YOU CANNOT SIDELOAD PCVR GAMES ONTO A QUEST 1 OR 2 AND PLAY THEM STANDALONE.
To play pirated PCVR games, download one using any of the rclone mirrors. Some may be packaged into repacked installers to make downloads smaller, so follow any instructions that are (hopefully) provided alongside the repack files.
PLAYING WITH STEAMVR
In my experience, the easiest way to run these games is through SteamVR, being only a Quest owner i've found running games through the Oculus PC app with Link very unreliable due to their software just being a MASSIVE processing power hog so only use Oculus Link if you have no other way or you think your PC is beefy enough for it. More on this a little bit down the line.
So, if you're on an Oculus headset (Quest with Link^, Rift) enable unknown sources in the settings for the Oculus PC software so you can run SteamVR.
Find the executable (.exe) for the game you've just downloaded and installed/extracted (you may have to look around in the game directory depending on what game) and add it as a Non-Steam game shortcut within Steam.
Then go to properties for the shortcut you have just created within Steam and enable "Include in VR Library"
Then when running SteamVR on launch you'll be presented with your VR library where your shortcuts should appear and you can just launch the games from there and enjoy.
^If you do Quest PCVR exclusively on Virtual Desktop, you do not need the Oculus software at all (correct me if i'm wrong)

POSSIBLE SETUP IMPROVEMENTS (IN MY EXPERIENCE)
Here i'm just gonna dump a few things that have enhanced my PCVR experience on a Quest over time in hopes that it'll help out others.
I play games on a budget ass rig (i5-4590s, 8gb ram, gtx 1650) so running the Oculus app and playing with Oculus Link is a MASSIVE MASSIVE hit on performance in games.
So if you're able to, use Virtual Desktop instead of Oculus Link as long as you've got a nice connection (preferrably ethernet) and at the cost of a bit of pixelation in display or some higher latency, you will run games WAAAY smoother. I am incredibly below spec for Half-Life: Alyx but by running it with Virtual Desktop and not the Oculus app bloating up my CPU power it sat at more than playable fps (50-72fps) for me at all times on low fidelity.
Along with that, close anything else you have running in the background like any web browser or Discord.
Sure VD is $25/£20, but its worth it not only for the experience improvements but for supporting the developer because this guy is doing a better job than Facebook when it comes to this stuff.

This post will be updated for general improvements (i suck at writing guides) and if any changes come along to the process.
I hope this helps those who want to try before they buy or the many clueless people who just want free games on their shiny new VR headsets.
But remember, please support developers and their work by buying their games on legit marketplaces, maybe wait for a sale or something and buy their games if you enjoy them. They absolutely slave away to bring us these incredible experiences and we are responsible for making sure they can afford a tin of sardines to ration for the week and maybe buy more models off the asset store for their next game
I know this is coming from the redditor who just taught you how to pirate every single VR game but i still like to support developers by buying their games if i enjoy them and it goes way further than you think when you buy a game.
Except for Bethesda and Rockstar, please pirate their games to your hearts content as they are shitty companies releasing low effort VR ports for a quick buck from the small but growing amount of VR enthusiasts and gamers.

Thanks for reading and enjoy!

3 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 155)

Welcome, fellow mobile gamer, to this weekly series documenting my week of mobile gaming :) And trust me, this was a really good week!
So today, I'll be covering a completely free and offline-playable pirate-themed adventure game, a super fun Worms-like 2D turn-based PvP shooter, and a unique arcade platformer with an awesome level editor and an active community of creative people creating some of the most challenging levels I’ve ever played in a mobile game.
Disagree with my opinion? Let’s have a friendly discussion below.
New to these posts? Check out the first one from 154 weeks ago here.
The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

Let's get to the games:

Astrogon [Game Size: 122 MB] (free)

Genre: Arcade / Platformer / Level-editor / Indie / Neon-style - Offline Playable
Orientation: Portrait
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review:
Astrogon is a fun and unique neon-style vertical arcade platformer with a solid level-editor and an active creative community that provides endless challenging levels.
The objective is to collect 3 stars and finish each level as quickly as possible by tapping the left and right sides of the screen to swiftly jump from platform to platform. Our character and the platforms can be either red or blue, and touching platforms of the opposite color means instant death. Fortunately, red and blue orbs allow us to switch color, and along with other gameplay-altering objects scattered throughout each level, they’re what makes the game truly challenging.
The elaborate community features allow us to comment on each user-created level and attempt to beat its world record. Combined with the simple controls, upbeat soundtracks, and levels that are relatively easy to finish but incredibly difficult to complete fast with all 3 stars, Astrogon provides one of the best arcade platforming experiences on mobile.
Creating and unlocking individual community-built levels requires tokens we acquire by spending the stars we earn from playing levels. Astrogon monetizes by selling additional stars and occasional forced and incentivized ads between levels that can be removed through a $2.99 iAP.

Boom Slingers [Game Size: 169 MB] (free)

Genre: Action / PvP / Worms-like / Indie - Requires Online Access
Orientation: Landscape
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review:
Boom Slingers is a hilarious 2D turn-based PvP shooter with sling mechanics reminiscent of those found in popular PC-title “Worms” and wacky weapons ranging from ninja stars to fireballs and lasers.
In the 1v1 real-time ranked or friendly fights, both players start with 2-3 characters scattered around the map and a pre-defined deck of 8 weapon cards, of which 4 are constantly in hand. On each turn, we select a weapon that we drag, aim, and release to destroy our opponents or blast them off the map. Every card has a mana cost, and for every turn, our mana pool increases by one, which means we can use multiple weapons per turn towards the end of each match.
There are 50 unique character designs and 40 weapon cards to unlock and level up by collecting more of the same card. Cards are rewarded through playing matches and progressing in the free and paid battle passes.
Boom Slingers is a highly polished indie game, its well-designed arena maps rotate throughout the day to keep things fresh, and the developer works closely with the community on Discord. It is the best and most frenetic PvP slingeartillery game I’ve played on mobile to date.
Monetization happens through a few incentivized ads, a $4.99 season pass, and iAPs up to $12.99 that allow us to progress faster. Because we’re matched based on a rank system and all weapons cards can be grinded through normal gameplay, I have not yet met unfairly strong paying players, although they do have a pay-to-progress-faster advantage.

Elly and the Ruby Atlas [Total Game Size: 394 MB] (free)

Genre: Adventure / RPG / Pirate-themed / Indie - Offline
Orientation: Landscape
Required Attention: Some
tl;dr review:
Elly and the Ruby Atlas is an offline-playable adventure RPG where we travel the seas to trade valuable goods as a captain, fighting pirates, crafting gear, and customizing our ship along the way.
As we travel from harbor to harbor, we buy and sell cargo to earn gold. Each harbor produces one or more goods, and since all prices are based on demand and supply, the prices are lower the greater the supply is. Harbors also feature main-story quests and multiple side-scrolling action-based combat missions where we must defeat pirates and colonists to earn blueprints used to craft new gear or ship upgrades that let us handle more crew members and cargo.
The game’s unique combat system allows us to target the head, chest, or legs of our opponents, but we must also block and move back before the enemies attack as they deal a lot of damage. Trading and exploring are definitely the main reasons to play, but the uniqueness of the combat system makes it decently interesting too.
Elly and the Ruby Atlas is completely free with no ads or iAPs. If you’ve been looking for a pirate-themed adventure trading game, this is some of the best mobile gaming has to offer, and a true hidden gem.
